This study uses quantitative methods adopt from bibliometrics to analyze the patents granted to Japan, Korea and Taiwan by United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) from 1991 to 2002. Citation age of most patent citations is from 2 to 8; Higher research impact was shown after the patent was issued 3 years and the impact started to decline after the patent issued 5 or 6 years The countries with higher productivity also show greater impact Japan, Germany, Great Britain and France also demonstrated significant performance in genetic engineering research 8
