Parts of Speech Noun, Verb, Pronoun, Adjective, Adverb, Preposition, Conjunction, Interjection
Noun • Person, place, thing, or idea • Can be common or proper • Can be singular or plural
Examples • George Washington, Charlotte Bronte (people, proper nouns) • man, woman (people, common nouns)
Verb • Shows action or indicates a condition or state of being • Two types: action or linking • Linking verbs: am, is, are, was, were, been, being
Examples I run. Polly talks. The boys eat. I am sick. She is tired. The people are free.
Pronoun • Takes the place of a noun • Some pronouns can show possession.
Examples • William said that he loves English! • Good Luck Charlie is a great show, and it comes on the Disney Channel. • The students love their new English teacher.
Adjective • Describes or modifies a noun or a pronoun • Answers the questions which, what kind, and how many?
Examples • The brown dog (which dog? ) • The big house (what kind of house? ) • The two cars (how many cars? )
Adverb • Describes or modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb • Answers the questions how, when, and to what extent? • Usually ends in -LY
Examples • Steven runs quickly. (How does he run? ) • Go to the office now! (Go to the office when? ) • She is extremely flustered. (To what extent is she flustered? )
Preposition • Shows the relationship between a noun or pronoun and some other word in a sentence. • Hint: anything a rabbit can do to a log. • Go under a log • Go around a log • Jump over a log
Examples • Most common prepositions: to, from, in, at, by • She walked around the spider. • We drove through a large gate. • He ducked as we went under a low tree limb.
Conjunction • Connects words or groups of words to each other. • Hint: FANBOYS • For, and, nor, but, or, yet, so
Examples • She likes to play piano, but she doesn't like to practice all the time. • The Duncanville Football Team is good this year, and we are going to watch their games. • Students can choose to do their homework, or they can choose to be irresponsible.
Interjection • Expresses emotion
Examples • Oh no, I forgot about the cookies in the oven! • Well, what are you going to do? • Yes, I'm excited that I made an A! • No, please don't call my mom!
