Somaliland -Denmark Fair Fishing Somaliland Investment Forum meeting in Mansor. Hotel September, 2016 Presented by: Yusuf Abdilahi Gulled Fair. Fishing Regional Program Manager
Fair. Fishing Motto: “G ive a man a fish, and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he will eat for a lifetime. ” Fair. Fishing is an independent, non-profitable International Non-Governmental (INGO). Since late 2011, we have been working closely together with fishermen, fishery companies, local and national organizations, ministries and authorities to upgrade and sustain a fishery industry in Berbera, Somaliland, fulfilling the needs for gainful employment, nutrition and optimal, rightful utilization of marine resources and providing an alternative to illegal activities at sea. Fair. Fishing has started in Berbera, where it is relatively safe to operate. The idea is to spread the fishery industry along the coasts of Africa’s Horn with possibility to scale it to countries with similar characteristics. We wish to create business, jobs, and economic growth and contribute to country stability through establishing a sustainable fishery industry.
LOT 2 Project Fair. Fishing is implementing a three year project on private sector institutional capacity building and strengthening (PICBS) in Somaliland Puntland funded by the European Union. The Overall objective is to ensure the Artisanal Fisheries populations in Somaliland Puntland have enhanced income, livelihoods, food security and nutrition over 3 years through improved and effective private sector management of the fishery. The purpose of the project is to strengthen the capacity of the private sector to maximize and manage marine resources.

Challenges in Fisheries of Somaliland: . Lack of different fishing skills and techniques/specially modern fishing methods. Inadequate of ice production and cool chain. Lack of availability of boat and motor maintenance work-shop. Lack of easy access to spare parts for motors and boats. . Inadequate of Fishing gear and/or need of introduction to modern fishing gear/electronic equipment like fish founder, echo sounder, GPS etc. Illegal fishing
Un-organized fishermen and/or fisheries Need of better fish market price transparency between fishermen and investors/boat owners/brokers. Here the owners of the vessels and investor have the big responsibility they must face reality and be more active to ensure their fishermen get the best conditions and good earnings. The brokers buy $ 1. 5 per Kg of fish from the fishermen on the boat and resell the same fish on the market for $ 5 it's not sustainable. Lack of/few marine scientists/fisheries experts Lack of/few cool chain mechanical experts/even professional electrician.
Ø Possible future solutions: . Fishing skills training – practical training. Introduction to modern fishing methods and modern fishing gear. Availability of boat and motor maintaining work-shops along the coast fishing centers i. e Saylac, Lughaya, Berbera, Xiis, Maydh …. . Enabling access to boat and motor spare parts. Enabling access to adequate cool chain. Enabling access to adequate fishing gear. Organizing fishermen and the fisheries. Introduction of transparency and accountability in fish market price. Training manpower in marine science and marine biology, cool chain mechanics and Other related fields like electricity/generators.
Thanks THE END
