CV: Basic Tips Keep it simple, readable, succinct n Content and presentation are both important n Don’t embellish! Don’t pad! Don’t repeat! n Consider eliminating CV “relics” n Marital status; name of spouse; children/birthdates n Hobbies & Other Interests n
CV: Basic Tips For internal CV: Use UWSOM Format!! n Use consistent style, formatting n Chronological order? Reverse chronological? n Include a header with your name and page number on each page n Times Roman; 11 or 12 point font; 1 inch margins n n Bold your name (? 1 -2 font sizes bigger than rest)
CV: Basic Tips For external CV, don’t use acronyms; spell out institutional words (e. g. UWMC; SCH; RRF) n Print a copy regularly & check for irregularities n n n e. g. , avoid new headings at bottom of page Keep it up-to-date Include date last revised on front page n Add new events/items as they happen n

Personal Data No Social Security number! n Consider eliminating CV relics (marital status; spouse’s name; names and birth dates of kids) n Contact information n Be concise (no embellishments) & be accurate n Consider including e-mail address n
Education Time to leave high school behind n Spell out full name of degree and university and note year of graduation n If currently working on a degree, put the word “candidate” after name of degree and note expected year of graduation n
Postgraduate Training OK to put internship together with your residency training, if done in the same institution n If there’s a gap, consider adding an explanatory phrase: n 1988 -90: Pediatric Residency (PL-1, 2) Case Western **1990 -91: Solo swim across the Atlantic Ocean n 1991 -92: Pediatric Residency (PL-3). Board Certification/Licensure n Spell out certifying Board(s) and be accurate! n American Board of Pediatrics, General Pediatrics Include date of certificate and recertification (or “engaged in maintenance of certification”) n Provide accurate information regarding all medical licenses (including inactive ones) n Remember that all Certification and Licensure information is in the public domain! n

Abstracts n Purpose(s): Tell about current work in progress (but not published yet) n Illustrate your participation at national meetings n n Can illustrate whether and how you presented the abstract (poster; platform, etc. ) n Consider limiting the number of abstracts especially if there are far fewer manuscripts! n “Recent Abstracts Presented (2005 to present)”
