Organizing a Web site
Webs are non-linear • Books are linear – Read page 1 before reading page 2 • Webs are non-linear – Each page can stand on its own • Webs often are “hierarchical”
Hierarchical Structures • Similar to family tree – Each generation is on a different level • Grandparents are at the top level – The newest generation is on the lowest level • There is no rule about how many generations you can include
Top level • The top-most level is the home page – Index. html – Links to all other pages • The next level is like the main branch of a tree • Level does not equate to importance – Lower level pages are not less important than higher level pages • Levels help organize pages by their relationship(s) to each other
Example of Hierarchical Structure Home Page Main Idea Sub-idea Sub-sub idea Sub-idea Sub-sub idea Main Idea Sub-idea Sub-sub idea Sub-idea
Explanation of Structure Levels • Main ideas are at the “grand parent” level • Sub-ideas are at the “parent” level • Sub-sub ideas are the “child” level
Levels as generations • No generation is more important than the others • Page topics determine which generation they belong to • Relationships of ideas determine which page information will be on
Summary • Hierarchical structure is most common for web sites • Structure is similar to a family tree • Structure shows relationship of ideas – Structure does not indicate importance of ideas
