Tip #1: Write Things Down Ø Know the details of your patients Ø Keep lists! l Keep notepads around your house • Keep personal To-Do lists • Keep lists of items you need to purchase as you discover you need them. Ø Does your phone have an app for that?
Tip #2: If something can be done right away- DO IT Ø Paying bills Ø Going through mail Ø Answering emails Ø Returning phone calls Ø DICTATIONS!!
Tip #3: CVS is one stop shopping Ø Toiletries/personal items Ø Greeting cards Ø Pharmacy Ø Basic food items/snacks/even Ø Pet needs Ø Etc…. beer&wine
Tip #4: Beating the “ 9 to 5” dilemma Have your list available for reference Ø Maximize your days off Ø Most banks have Saturday hours Ø Most businesses have some late hours Ø Dentist open on Sat? Ø Schedule late doc appointment on happy day Ø Out early? Get one task done before heading home Ø
Tip #5: Know your routine Ø Try to put things in the same place every time l l Keys Cell phone/ IPAD!! White coat/pager/ID badge Work shoes Helps decrease time you spend looking for these items and helps MAXIMIZE sleep in the morning Ø Make a habit and stick to it Ø
Tip #6: The File Box Ø Ø CVS might not have one, but Office Max does Get supplies: l Ø General categories l l l l l Ø Ø Folders, tabs, sharpies Bills Residency info Finances/credit cards My health/insurance Loans/taxes Car Warranties Computer Important documents File as you go: don’t let this build up! Get a Shredder!
Tip #7: The Binder Ø Do you have a stack of articles you plan on reading? Ø Do you have a pile of articles/references from med school you would like to keep? Ø Do you have a 3” black binder organized by organ system?
Tip #8: Keep your personal life organized Ø Know your work schedule before committing Ø Take opportunities for fun when you can Ø Know your funds l l l Balance your check book Don’t be late with payments Will likely decrease your 9 -5 dilemmas Ø Use a calendar
Tip #9: Have an organized house Ø Ø Ø Ø Get rid of JUNK!!! You just moved; good time to reassess your stuff Go through closet for items to toss or donate 1 -2 x/year If you haven’t used it in a year-TOSS You may be attached to med school notes/binders-but… Don’t feel guilty about tossing old gifts you don’t like or use Use boxes, labels, everything should have a “place” l Helps you get things back together when they get out of hand
Tip #10: Keep a Clean House Ø Start with making your bed Ø Daily 5 -10 minute cleaning Ø Quick Clorox wipe downs of surfaces Ø Every few weeks clean areas that don’t normally get attention Ø Start high and work your way down
