What is FP 7? Ø FP 7 is the main instrument to fund research What is FP 7? Ø FP 7 is the main instrument to fund research at European level Ø FP 7 complements national programmes to finance research Ø FP 7 has a lifespan of 7 years (2007 – 2013) (except EURATOM: 5 years) Ø FP 7 has a budget of over € 53 billion Ø FP 7 budget is mainly spent on grants to fund research in Europe and beyond Ø FP 7 co-finance research, technological development and demonstration projects Ø FP 7 main objectives: • Strengthen the scientific and technological base of European industry; • Encourage Europe international competitiveness; • Contribute to the EU becoming the world’s leading research area; • Promoting research that supports EU policies.

Cooperation Specific Programme • Supports collaborative research activities carried out by different research bodies Cooperation Specific Programme • Supports collaborative research activities carried out by different research bodies in trans-national cooperation • Supports cooperation between universities, industry, research centres and public authorities throughout the EU and beyond • Supports activities aiming at coordinating and structuring Member States’ national research programmes • The Cooperation programme is divided into ten distinct themes covering the most important fields of knowledge and technology (e. g. Health, Environment, Transport, Social Sciences, etc. )

Capacities Specific Programme • Enhance research and innovation capacities throughout Europe and ensure their Capacities Specific Programme • Enhance research and innovation capacities throughout Europe and ensure their optimal use • Stimulate EU full research potential and knowledge resources • The Capacities Programme covers seven areas • Examples of activities supported: – Actions to optimise the use and development of existing research infrastructures in all fields of S&T – Support cross-border regional cooperation in research – Strengthen R&D potential of less advanced regions

People Specific Programme • The Programme is entirely dedicated to human resources in research People Specific Programme • The Programme is entirely dedicated to human resources in research • Main objectives: – support mobility of researchers – stimulate career development of researchers (addresses both young and experienced researchers) • Actions supported: Ø Initial training (improve young researchers' career perspectives) Ø Life long training (support experienced researchers in complementing or acquiring new skills and competencies) Ø Industry-academia partnership (stimulate mobility between sectors and increase knowledge sharing through longer term co-operation) Ø International dimension (foster mutually beneficial research collaboration with research actors from outside Europe) Ø Specific actions (support removing obstacles to mobility and enhancing the career perspectives of researchers in Europe)

Ideas Specific Programme • The Ideas Programme finance frontier or basic research • Entirely Ideas Specific Programme • The Ideas Programme finance frontier or basic research • Entirely bottom up driven = priorities not decided at central level but completly researchers driven • Addressed to individual research teams • ERC Grants cover 100% of eligible costs • The objectives are: • The European Research Council (ERC) has been established by the Commission under this specific programme. • The ERC consists of an independent Scientific Council and a dedicated implementation structure • The ERC operates according to the principles of scientific excellence, autonomy, efficiency, transparency and accountability – – To reinforce excellence, dynamism and creativity in European research To improve the attractiveness of Europe for the best researchers from both European and third countries as well as for industrial research investment
