People in Societies Activities n n n After learning about the explorers, students will People in Societies Activities n n n After learning about the explorers, students will learn about the different types of immigrants who settled in the area. Students will create a collage of one culture that can be found in the Midwest. The collage should include pictures of customs, traditions, clothing, and food. Students will learn about the weather of the Midwest and then will create a chart of how the weather affects the lives of the people living in the Midwest. This includes the crops that are grown, the weather patterns like tornadoes, and other information weather activities. Students will learn about the crops that are grown in the Midwest and how the Midwest contributes to the world’s food supply. Students will research a person from the Midwest who has had an impact on the United States. Students will create an autobiography of the person citing the person's contributions to the Midwest. Students will discover one food recipe that is popular in the MIDWEST Midwest. Students will cook CULTURE the dish and share it with the class.

Students will learn the states in the Midwest by putting a puzzle of the states together. Students will learn the capitals of states in the Midwest by matching the capitals with the correct states after listening to School House Rocks states song. Students will learn the landforms of the Midwest by reading about the physical characteristics of the region. To expand on the landforms, students will create a guidebook to one important landmark in the Midwest. Students will compare the landforms of the Midwest to the rest of North America. Students will be assigned a state in the Midwest and will be required to present the state to the class by sharing location, flag, capital, landforms, etc.

Economics Activities n n n Students will learn about supply and demand by “bidding” Economics Activities n n n Students will learn about supply and demand by “bidding” on a candy item. Students will be asked why they were willing to “pay” such a high price, and would they have done the same if they knew there were more? Students will learn about division of labor by making construction paper hot air balloons. A few students will work alone and several groups will be working in the division of labor system. Students will learn about providers of goods vs. services. They will each receive an index card with a profession on it, and class discussion will be administered to show interdependence. Students will learn the value of U. S. dollars compared to Canadian dollars by using a conversion tool online. Students will learn about the distribution of goods. Each group of students will receive a bag full of “goods” and discuss how they will distribute amongst themselves.
