Offshore cargo transportation Training program
Offshore cargo transportation • • • CONTENT. Procedure. General Cargo: – – – • • • containers; pallets; drilling pipes. Cargo in bulk and liquid cargo. Communication. Safety.
Offshore cargo transportation • Supply vessels deliver to off-shore objects such as riggs, FSO, other ships, etc. different kinds of cargo, such as –general cargo; –cargo in bulk.
Offshore cargo transportation • General cargo for off -shore objects is usually in special containers, boxes or pallets. To each upper corner of container or box usually wire sling is attached. All these slings are connected to each other by muster ring. To lift such cargo put muster ring to the crane hook and crane will pick cargo unit up. It’s necessary to watch that ring doesn’t slide down from the hook untill sling will be under tension. Also it’s nercessary to keep cargo by guide ropes, attached to lower corners of container, to avoid its swinging.
Offshore cargo transportation • In case cargo unit is pallet soft slings are in use. Using long hooks crewmembers must put two soft slings under pallet at equal distance from the center. After passing the slings under palette all four ends of the slings must be pulled up and equalized in length. All four eyes to be put on the crane hook. • Further procedure is equal to lifting of container.
Offshore cargo transportation • Another kind of general cargo can be drilling pipes. They can be collected into the box for lifting or composed to the bundle. In case of box slinging and rigging is the same as for container. In case of bundle soft slings are usually using. In such case put two slings of equal length at equal distance from the middle of pipes. One eye of the sling put in another (make chocker hitch) to squeeze the bundle. At first crane should lift cargo gently, slow to tight slings to squeeze cargo completely. Deck personal should help holding slings and allow them to tight up properly at equal length.
Offshore cargo transportation • During loading /discharging of cargo unit at least two tug lines should be attached to opposite side of each unit. Crew members should hold these tug lines during lifting/lowering of unit to avoid swinging of unit and to put it to proper place. When lowering unit is lower than 1 m(3 feet) above the deck people can guide unit manually holding it from the sides not in the way of cargo and do not put hands in places where hands can be jammed.
Offshore cargo transportation
Offshore cargo transportation • Cargo in bulk and liquid cargo. Cargo in bulk onboard supply vessel is usually carried as powder and can be discharged via hoses. From this side loading/discharging of bulk cargo is similar as loading/discharging of liquid cargo. Due to this we will consider all these substancies as one kind of cargo. Difference is that for each cargo must be own hose only. Supply vessel must approach to the object where you are going to discharge cargo to the close distance and maintaine position. Crane from the object should lower the hose to the deck of supply vessel At the hose must be lazy sling. Taking the lazy sling by tugger wire pull the hose onboard to the place where manifold of such kind of cargo is located.
Offshore cargo transportation • Hose is connected to manifold and secured by stopper further toward the stern of the vessel with loop to avoid jerks due to the ship’s motion on the swell. When tugger winch is in using often snatch blocks can be used to change direction of pull and bring hose’s end to manifold. • After this cargo operation can be started.
Offshore cargo transportation • Offshore transfer of liquid cargo can be done from ship to ship. • Ships can be moored either alongside to each other or stern to stern. • At first ships secure mooring lines and after this send cargo hose and secure it with slack.
Offshore cargo transportation • Communication. • For communication with crane driver, deck and bridge use VHF and hand signals
Offshore cargo transportation • Safety. • Use proper PPE (Coverall, helmet, safety shoes, working vest, gloves) • Do not stay under suspended cargo. • Do not stay under crane’s derrick. • Do not stay between cargo and shipside toward cargo moves (on the way of cargo).
Offshore cargo transportation • Use tug lines to swing the cargo unit, don’t touch it by hand if cargo unit is higher than 1 m (3 feet) above the deck. • Watch out the crane hook. • Securing the hoses never stay between hose and ship’s side to avoid man overboard situation.
Offshore cargo transportation • • • CONTROL QUESTIONS. What kind of cargo can be delivered offshore by supply vessels? What is procedure of cargo operations with general cargo? How must be handled containers and boxes? How must be handled pallets? How must be handled drilling pipes? What is procedure of cargo operations with cargo in bulk? What is procedure of cargo operations with liquid cargo? Which kind of communication must be used during cargo operations? What are the main safety rules during cargo operations?
