What is a framework? • A template to base the development of all (scripted and non scripted) language specific syllabuses • This is what we currently have in NSW • This is different to AC Some important things about this document…. • multiple entry points along K-8 continuum • two options • content will be based on AC • syllabus and content is task based © The Association of Independent Schools of NSW
Some guiding questions…. • Is the framework approach appropriate? • Is there an alternative approach? • Does it accommodate needs of all students? • Is it clear what students are expected to achieve? • Could you use this document? • What do you like about our current K-10 syllabuses? © The Association of Independent Schools of NSW
Introduction to the Framework (p 6 -9) Possible questions for discussion: • Is the framework approach appropriate? • Does this framework cater for differences between languages? • Is this the best approach in order to cater for learning needs of all students? • Should there be a statement about mandatory hours? © The Association of Independent Schools of NSW
AIM (p 10) • Is the aim appropriate? • Does it provide a statement of the overall purpose of the syllabus? • Does it contain everything? © The Association of Independent Schools of NSW
Objectives (p 10) • Do the 3 objectives define the knowledge, skills, understanding and values and attitudes to be developed through the study of Languages? • 2 objectives in content: Communicating and Understanding (similar to AC) • Where does the objective Values and attitudes fit in? © The Association of Independent Schools of NSW
Course structure and Options (PP 11 -17) 2 options Include Early Stage outcomes K-6 outcomes same in both options Option 1 Ø K-10 Ø 1 document Ø Multiple entry points Ø Differentiated content Ø Stages 4 and 5 - generic to accommodate range of students © The Association of Independent Schools of NSW

Outcomes (p 11 -17) § Are the outcomes clear statements of an end point? § Could you use these outcomes to measure and report achievement? § Is there sufficient difference to indicate progression through the Stages? § Is the terminology clear? © The Association of Independent Schools of NSW
Organisation of Content (PP 18 -25) § Task-based § Is the description of the difference between an exercise, activity and task clear? (p 18) § Is the layout and organisation of the content clear and does it contain all necessary elements? § Is it clear what students learn in language? § Do you have suggestions for terminology? © The Association of Independent Schools of NSW
Yrs 7 -10 Life Skills (PP 26 -28) § Do the 7 -10 Life Skills outcomes provide sufficient scope for developing programs for students with special education needs? § Do the 7 -10 Life Skills outcomes provide a sound basis for guiding assessment and reporting of student achievement? § What additional information (if any) would be helpful for you when planning and programming for a student with special education needs? © The Association of Independent Schools of NSW
