1 Corinthians 13: A Guide to Culture and Missions If I speak with the tongue of a national, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a changing cymbal. If I wear the national dress and understand the culture and all forms of etiquette, and if I copy all mannerisms so that I could pass for a national but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor, and I spend my energy without reserve, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love endures long hours of language study, and is kind to those who mock her accent, Love does not envy those who stay home, Love does not exalt her home culture; is not proud of her national superiority, does not boast about the way we do it back home, does not seek her own ways, is not easily provoked into telling about the beauty of her home country, does not think evil about this culture, Love bears all criticism about her home culture, believes all good things about this new culture, confidently anticipates being at home in this place, endures all inconveniences. Love never fails; but where there is cultural anthropology, it will fail; where there is contextualization it will lead to syncretism; where there is linguistics, it will change. For we know only part of the culture and we minister to only part. But when Christ is reproduced in this culture, then our inadequacies will be insignificant. When I was in America I spoke as an American, I understood as an American, I thought as an American, but when I left America I put away American things. Now we adapt to this culture awkwardly; but He will live in it intimately; now I speak with a strange accent, but He will speak to the heart. And now these three remain: cultural adaptation, language study, and love. Author: UNKNOWN

Crossing Barriers for Evangelism Acts 1: 8 “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth. ” Understanding Our Meaning of each of these areas for us today Jerusalem was the city where Christ spoke these words. Our Jerusalem is our family, friends, neighbors, co-workers and others that we know or have met. Judea was the area surrounding Jerusalem and could be compared to our county or metropolitan area. Our Judea is the people of our culture in our county or metropolitan area that we do not know. Samaria end of the earth Samaria was a nearby area and the people were from a different ethnic group, a different culture and had a different religion. Our Samaria is the people in our surrounding area who are of a different ethnic group, culture or religion. The end of the earth involves all people who are not in one of the groups previously mentioned.

Crossing Barriers for Evangelism Barriers which we cross to reach out to the people in each of these areas Jerusalem the barrier of our own fear Judea the barrier of getting acquainted with strangers Samaria the barrier of understanding a different ethnic group, culture or religion the end of the earth the barrier of learning another language or going to another part of the world

Four C's for Evangelism Confrontation Some Individuals need confrontation (these are church attendees who depend on their own efforts) A. Nicodemus - John 3: 1 -21 - depended on religious involvement B. the rich young ruler - Mark 10: 17 -22 - depended on his own works Clarification Compassion Creation Some individuals need clarification (these are interested church attendees who have never understood the meaning of repentance and faith - Acts 20: 21, I Thessalonians 1: 9 -10) A. the Ethiopian - Acts 8: 26 -40 - needed the Gospel clearly explained B. the Bereans - Acts 17: 11 -12 - needed small group Bible study C. Apollos - Acts 18: 26 - needed one-to-one clarification Some individuals need compassion (these are people who feel I am "too bad" to be accepted by God) A. FOUR WAYS OF DECISION MAKING IN THE CHURCH When working with developing leadership in the church, we try to instill their awareness of decision making skills that can have either positive or negative consequences. Basically there are four points we look at to move towards better communication and decision making to develop a healthier leadership team. 1. Opinions —Usually from ignorance. For example: when interviewing someone a street corner a reporter asked, “Is O. J. Simpson guilty? ” The answer, “Of Course!” The individual knew instinctively that their opinion was “right”, so it’s their opinion that counts. After all, they know how to read or understand a person (without communication. ) As long as they have the option to change their mind — fickleness. (see Proverbs 23: 7) 2. Rights —“I want my ‘pound of flesh’—I deserve this—and I want what I want now!” A person who believes he deserves his “fair share of the pie. ” This person might say, “It is my “right” to have or do this” causing bickering, bitterness and divisions. Even with all the right records and witnesses, you almost always have to “legally” prove this person wrong. Also known as the “poor me syndrome. ” “I never get my way!” (see Genesis 4: 5 -9) 3. Convictions —Can result in religious pious legalism but not always godly. Decisions based only on convictions cause wars and factions—a proud person. It may be legal, but it doesn't mean that it is based on the truth. (see John 12: 37 -43) 4. Biblical Principles —Based on the word of God without compromise. Serving without care who gets the credit so that God receives all the glory. This involves humility of heart. (see Philippians 2: 5 -11)

Equipping Gifts and Serving Gifts As we look at the gifts that we have listed from the various passages, we see that there are three equipping gifts for today and a whole variety of serving gifts. The spiritual leaders who have been given the equipping gifts are to equip each Christian to use his or her gifts to serve the Lord Let's look at these gifts in a diagram form and then we will give a definition for each of the gifts. Moving from Worldly Leadership to Servant Leadership Mark 10: 35 -45 Power or position - Rights People follow you because they have to. “You know that those who are considered rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. ” - Mark 10: 42 Production - Results People follow you because of what you have done for the organization. “ For you have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews‘ religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the church of God, and wasted it: And profited in the Jews' religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers. ” - Galatians 1: 13 -14 Permission Relationships People follow you because they want to. From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. Then said Jesus unto the twelve, “Will you also go away? ” Then Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. ” - John 6: 66 -68 Personal development Reproduction People follow you because of what you have done for their development. “Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to be great among you shall be your servant. ” - Mark 10: 44 Personhood Respect People follow you because of who you are and what you represent. “And whoever of you desires to be great shall be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for man. ” Mark 10: 44 -45
