Rural Poverty Situation • 68%-70% of agricultural households live below poverty line, about 9% of the nation’s rural poor • life expectancy is lowest, at 65 years against national average at 70 years • literacy rate is 83% against national average of 94% • functional literacy rate of women is 67% • 30% do not have access to safe drinking water • 80% do not have access to credit from formal financial institution “in a threatened resource base”
