NON-PRODUCTIVE TYPES OF WORD-BUILDING
Sound-interchange is the way of wordbuilding when some sounds are changed to form a new word. It is non-productive in Modern English; it was productive in Old English and can be met in other Indo. European languages.
The change may affect: the root vowel to feed – food, to strike – stroke, to sing – song the root consonant to speak – speech Both life – to live It may also be combined with affixation: strong (a) – strength (n) with affixation and shift of stress: 'democrat – de'mocracy
Sound imitation or onomatopoeia [ɔnəmætə'pi: ə] It is the way of word building when imitating of different sounds forms a word. There are some semantic groups of words formed by means of sound imitation a) Sounds produced by human beings: to whisper, to giggle, to sneeze, to whistle etc. b) Sounds produced by animals, birds, insects: to hiss, to buzz, to bark, to moo, to twitter etc. c) Sounds produced by nature and objects: to splash, to bubble, to ding-dong, etc.

Backformation (disaffixation) is the way of word-building when a word is formed by dropping the final morpheme to form a new word. to bach (from bachelor) to televise (from television) to baby-sit (from baby-sitter)
Blending is the way of word-building when word is formed from parts of two words (merging into one word) Bustle + hurry = hustle Breakfast + lunch = brunch Smoke + haze = smaze (дымка) Positive + electron = positron Medical + care = medicare
