Who is UNICEF? United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF)
What does UNICEF do? • UNICEF was created to provide food, clothing, and health care for those who need it. UNICEF provides many types of assistance and help to children and mothers. It receives money from different governments and private persons. UNICEF works in almost all countries of the world. They help save lives, protecting childhoods and getting children to school. UNICEF's main aims are to help people around the world who are poor and who have been hurt by the war going on in the world, like in Africa. UNICEF also tries to achieve different or even dangerous goals to save people who are poor, sick, disabled and so on. UNICEF advocates for people to have rights, especially children, to have basic things like an education, health care and a place to live.
When did Unicef start? • UNICEF means The United Nations Children's Fund. It is an international organization that was founded on 11 December 1946 with the name of United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund.
Where does UNICEF work? • UNICEF has programmes in more than 150 countries, territories and areas. There are 36 National Committees in wealthier countries that raise money for programmes in developing countries and create an understanding about children's rights, working to ensure that everybody knows how important it is to be aware of international issues. UNICEF's headquarters are based in New York in the US. It is there that all UNICEF's policies and key decisions are made. Ann M Veneman is the Director of UNICEF
Why do they do this work? • We help governments to build schools, train teachers and provide textbooks so that every child can get an education. • We support families and communities to care for children and protect them against exploitation and abuse, fulfilling their right to a childhood. We work with partners to ensure that every child has the opportunity to take part in sport and play. • We support governments to build and equip health systems, train health workers and provide food and clean water, so every child can be as healthy as possible.
