THE HISTORY OF NEW YEAR
New Year in Russia is celebrated on January 1, the first day of the Gregorian Calendar. In earlier times, New Year was celebrated in the month of September. Later, this day was forbidden by Czar Peter, the Great. In 1699, a decree was read about counting of years from Birth of Christ since January 1. Thus, this day was declared as a New Year's day in Russia. Since then, New Year became a family holiday for the people of Russia.
Until 1752, the year in which Britain and her American colonies switched from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar, New year fell on Christmas day (25 December). In 1752 the official date of the holiday was the 1 st of January. The inhabitants of the Kingdom willingly adopted such an innovation, as was the opportunity to extend Christmas holidays.
THE MEANING OF THE HOLIDAY
The meaning of the holiday is that people lebrate the beginning of the new year. A lot of people start a "new life", promise to give up ad habits, become better, do what they did not have the last year, make wishes at 00: 00 a. m. nd just get together with the whole family and riends, eat taste dishes, drink a lot of alcohol and just have fun.
In Russia, this holiday is very much loved and awaited. The whole country is preparing for it for a month. As for Britain, the British celebrate more calmly. Christmas is the main holiday for them.
