New adult fiction
New Adult (NA) fiction is a developing genre of fiction with protagonists aged from 18 to 25. NA characters are often portrayed experiencing: college, living away from home for the first time, military deployment, apprenticeships, a first steady job, a first serious relationship, etc.
New Adult embodies the period between adolescence and adulthood, so there a wide range of issues to tackle. Common themes in NA include: identity, sexuality, race, alcohol abuse, drug abuse, bullying, empowerment, familial struggles, loss of innocence, fear of failure, etc.
New Adult is a new genre whose target audience is people like meyoung twentysomethings, overwhelmingly of the female variety. A typical plotline features two brooding, damaged souls with damaged pasts (typical examples include characters whose entire families have tragically died, characters who have grown up in abusive homes, characters suffering from manic depression or panic attacks) who meet, sparks fly, and drama ensues. The books are often titled something like "Damaged" or "Broken" or "Smashed with a Sledgehammer“.
The books cater to the former Twilight crowd who felt unsatisfied with the laughably chaste romance but maybe weren't yet ready to move onto the absurdly unchaste, the much talked-about 50 Shades of Grey. NA
