General objectives of NEST-IDEA to mobilise the scientific community to NEST implementation by : • exploring new ideas, mapping the best scientific centres in Europe, in particular unknown small research groups • contacting and networking research groups around conceptions in new and emerging scientific and technological areas • assisting in consortia organisation for preparing unconventional projects NEST - IDEA February 2004

NCPs and NEST-IDEA SSA gives NCPs additional capabilities to make their effort : • better tailored to the need of their OWN community • Assuring interdisciplinary approach • Is it wise to support „conventional“ channels ? NEST - IDEA February 2004

Long term objectives • Raise the quantity and quality of submissions to the NEST-Program from participants from the newly associated states in the framework programme • Support for NCPs for the highest possible standard of support and service for participants • Achieve these goals by supporting the network of the NCP systems in NAC and CC • Exchange of experience and learning from each other NEST - IDEA February 2004

Specific objectives I • to explore and select the most promising ideas arising in European research laboratories by collecting on a regional and national level NEST ideas for future Nest proposal submission • to encourage small research groups and single researchers to share their conceptions and submit them as NEST projects to the European Commission • to analyse newest trends in world sciences by invited expert groups NEST - IDEA February 2004

Specific objectives II • to anticipate opportunities and threats for European and world society by observation of scientific movement, conferences and scientific literature studies • build NEST awareness by organising • series of info-days • workshops, seminars • ad hoc meetings on national and regional level NEST - IDEA February 2004

Specific objectives III to ensure transfer of best practice, knowledge and experience concerning know-how and networking through: • advanced and existing internet tools (CORDIS, IGLO) for partner search • NEST consortia establishing NEST - IDEA February 2004

Specific objectives IV • to establish a NCP-database of ideas, potential participants, events, possibilities of financial support and projects • to establish an internet tool (intranet) for NEST partners’ communication • to involve stakeholders in the early stage of ideas’ implementation • to assure intellectual property rights for new ideas disclosed by researchers NEST - IDEA February 2004

Contribution to ERA • The exploration of still not disclosed ideas important for future development of science • Increasing awareness of NEST in the European research community • Setting up a pan-European platform for the exchange of ideas in Europe NEST - IDEA February 2004

New Acceding Countries • The project will have high impact in integrating the research groups from MS, ACC and NAC. It will implement best practice and experience from each region of Europe. The involvement of scientists from Candidate Countries will support the integration • NEST-IDEA contacted already NCPs from AT, CZ and RO for closer cooperation and proposal submission NEST - IDEA February 2004

Support action but not a competition • avoid the confusion of target scientists • underline the role as support and not as competition (or even alternative to COM) That means: • Simple: avoid similar terms ( Eo. I, Portal etc. ) • Strategic: dissemination of some results will be not public but will serve the COM first NEST - IDEA February 2004

What kind of support we expect from the scientists ? • Advice and assistance, as NEST often act outside „experienced“ FP 6 community • More interdisciplinary thinking That means: • More mails, more questions ? • But also a chance for a quite new perspectives ! NEST - IDEA February 2004

What else could be done ? • In addition, evidence will be compiled from recent studies in the field • qualitative evaluations of innovation programmes • results on research on management of research with high risk NEST - IDEA February 2004
