Second Grade Curriculum en. Vision MATH Following a rigorous pilot and evaluation process over the last two years, the Milford School District has adopted a brand new Math program called “en. Vision Math. • Grounded in research and results • Designed specifically for implementation of the rigorous Common Core Standards • Comprehensive Math program that develops deep mathematical understanding through interactive and engaging lessons • Promotes understanding at every level: Conceptual understanding (how and why something works), procedural fluency and practice, and real world applications • Includes materials that offer support and challenge for every student • Leading-edge digital tools

Following a rigorous evaluation process last year, the Milford School District has adopted a brand new English Language Arts program called “Journeys!” • • • Fully based on research Designed specifically for implementation of the rigorous Common Core Standards Comprehensive ELA program: includes phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, writing, grammar, language, spelling, speaking and listening Engaging for students so that they become immersed in their learning Includes materials for students who need extra support as well as students who are advanced Leading-edge digital tools

Social Studies Cram Series Students will use literature to study rules and laws, economics, history including life in the 1800’s and geography. Science Smithsonian Kits Your child will be studying insects and their life cycles, balancing and weighing, and soils this year.

RTI Time n n n Your child will be switching classrooms and teachers this year. See paperwork in your child’s folder. Students will be ability grouped for reading based on STAR Assessments and Dibels Testing. Children will also receive 30 minutes of additional math instruction based on needs. They may be switching classrooms as well for this service.

Individualized Instruction Accelerated Reader Students will be expected to read two books weekly on their individual reading level. Their goal will be to have an average of 90% to 100%. The individual reading level is based on the results of the STAR Test given at the beginning of the year. Please note that I will have students reading both fiction and non-fiction books and they need to be proficient at both in order to move up a level.

Grading Reminder Grading Scale A = 90 -100 B = 89 -80 C = 79 -70 D = 69 -65 F = 64 and below Promotion Policy To be promoted students must maintain a D or above average in Reading and Math. Honor Roll Students need to have an A or B in all subjects.

Classroom Management Students are required to follow classroom and school rules as outlined in the handbook. Choosing not to follow the rules will have consequences. 1. 2. 3. 4. First Prompting = verbal warning Second Prompting = flip green card to another green card Third Prompting = flip second green card to yellow Fourth Prompting = flip yellow card to red parent notification through phone call or note in planner. For each flip a student receives through inappropriate behavior, he/she must walk to a designated spot on the playground at the beginning of recess.

PBS Positive Behavior System n n n School wide program Students are awarded tickets for following school rules. Tickets are cashed in bi-monthly to purchase special activities and items.

Attendance and More Attendance When students are absent they are required to bring a note to school the following day stating the reason for absence. Gym Please see on gym days that children wear soft soled shoes. If they are wearing opened toed or platform shoes they are not permitted to participate in most activities. Recess We go out as often as possible. Please dress your child appropriately. Our playground is very windy and chilly even on days that appear warm.
