The main information NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), or OTAN (Organisation du Traité de l'Atlantique Nord), is an intergovernmental military alliancebased on the North Atlantic Treaty which was signed on 4 April 1949. The organization constitutes a system of collictive defence whereby its member states agree to mutual defence in response to an attack by any external party.
About history The North Atlantic Treaty was signed by President Harry Truman in Washington, D. C. , on 4 April 1949 and was ratified by the United States that August. It included three states: The USA, The United Kingdom and France. Only US had a nuclear weapon.
The cold war During the cold war (1946 -1991) between NATO and Warsaw Pact countries Europe was divided into two parts. Eastern Europe was in the Soviet part, while Western Europe countries were NATO members. The biggest number of NATO troops was in Federal Republic of Germany. Sometimes there was a big tension between these two war machines.
War conflicts NATO members took part in many conflicts on all continents. The first war was the Korean war (19501953), where American pilots were fighting with Soviet ones. The biggest conflict was the Vietnam war (19651972). It was a bid tragedy of NATO because troops were defeated by North Vietnam soldiers.
