National Symbols of Australia
The National Flag Australia's leading national symbol is the Australian National Flag which was flown for the first time on 3 September 1901 which is also celebrated as the Australian National Flag Day every year. The national flag comprises of three basic elements on a blue base which are: the Union Jack, the Commonwealth Star and the Southern Cross.
The Commonwealth Coat of Arms The Coat of Arms features two animals - The Emu and the Kangaroo. It is claimed that these animals are featured because they are both native to Australia and both find it difficult to go backwards - they can only ever advance, going forward.
The Floral Emblem The floral emblem for Australia is the Golden Wattle. This is because it flowers in the Australian colours of Green and Gold. It is also tough enough to withstand droughts and harsh weather - just like the Australian people can cope with adversity!
The National Gemstone of Australia-The Opals are famous for their beautiful colours. The opal is prescious to the Aboriginal community too. Australia is responsible for 95% of the Supply of Opals to the rest of the world so it seems fitting that this should be the national gemstone.
Australian Kangaroos are wonderful animals. The Kangaroo is the iconic animal of Australia. It even appears on the coat of arms for Australia. It was chosen along with the Emu to show progress. As these animals never go backwards only forwards.
Australian Kangaroos Australian kangaroos are endemic or unique to Australia and there are over 60 different species of kangaroos and close relatives. They belong to the “macropod” family, which means “great footed. ” You will however see the odd kangaroos in zoos around the world and there are even some that are native to New Guinea.
