Candidacy O What are the criteria for eligibility aside from meeting the GPA requirement and completing community service hours?
Candidacy Process O Why do you want to be considered for NHS membership? O NHS is an organization for students interested in continuing to serve the school and community. O Students who are leaders both in and out of the classroom, possess strong character and integrity (i. e. , do the “right thing”) and are dedicated to serving others make the strongest NHS candidates. O You must show proof of what makes you stand out in the areas of character, leadership, service, extracurricular activities, honors/awards/recognitions. O Complete Candidacy Packet, obtain 2 teacher recommendations, submit service forms
Timeline O Candidacy Packet is due to Mrs. Harrison in the Main Office no later than Thursday, March 8 th by 2 p. m. Late packets are not accepted! O We recommend making a copy of your packet. O Induction will be held on May 23 rd at 6 p. m. (same as Awards Night)
School & Community Involvement O Notice the distinct sections for school involvement & community activities O Clubs, teams, musical groups, community organizations O Provide thorough explanations
Leadership O Two separate areas O Demonstrate initiative in promoting school activities O Demonstrate initiative, reliability and dependability in organized groups (not always school related) O Describe how you display leadership in these groups
Honors/Awards/Recognitions O Honors, awards and recognitions for outstanding achievements O Think beyond the paper certificate (and Honor Roll) O School, athletic, musical, work, volunteer, church affiliated, Boy/Girl Scouts O Explain the criteria and significance: what did earning that honor entail? O Descriptions help explain the significance!
Service O Actions undertaken by the student which are done with or on behalf of others without any direct financial or material compensation to the individual performing the service O Service hours to count for candidacy: July 1 - packet deadline
Service Forms More are located in… O Main Office O On website (Word document version) O Room 233 O Room 238
Character O Demonstrate consistent record of conduct or behavior through academic integrity, respect, responsibility and trustworthiness. O 2 Teacher Recommendation Forms O Give 1 to each teacher; teacher will turn it to Main Office O Provide the form in person; say “thank you!”
Character (staff feedback) O Integrity: No recorded incidents of cheating, copying or intentional dishonesty; leadership in class, willingness to go above and beyond what may be expected O Positive behavior: No record of skipping classes or violating school regulations; no record of behaving in a derogatory, rude or disrespectful way to students or adults O Ethics: indication that the student chooses to do the right thing in all situations
Completed Packet O Typed essay O Sections NEATLY written out in pen/may provide additional paper if needed O Responses for all required components must be filled in O Required signatures from student and parent, plus sponsors on sections indicated O Service forms Handed in separately O 2 Teacher Recommendation Forms
If you are accepted… O Do you have the time? O Live up to your Candidacy Packet! O If you don’t continue to uphold the requirements of candidacy, you can be placed on probation and/or other honors recognizing you as an NHS member will be withheld.
If accepted… O Summer service: (20 hours) O Set amount of hours during the school year; hours submitted each quarter O Meetings (1 x a month approximately for 30 -45 mins. ) O Participation in projects throughout the year O Ongoing GPA requirement of 88%
