Book Repair Programme ¡ Undertake a set of basic mending activities used to address problems caused by use, age, poor storage conditions or inherently problematic materials and/or structure.
Book Repair Programme - Actions ¡ Review returned circulating materials ¡ Scan the stacks ¡ Talk with colleagues ¡ Each option chosen (repair, replacement, commercial binding etc. ) has a cost factor both in staff time and for materials
Book Repair Programme – Equipment and Supplies ¡ There a number of equipment and supplies that will be necessary for the book repair programme. ¡ Some of the items we can make , but we will need to buy some tools and equipment from a reputable supplier.
Book Repair Programme – Tool Kit o Archival quality repair tape o Awl o Bone folders o Blotting paper o Wax paper o Mylar o Book press o Brush o Paper, scrap o o o o Book Weights Scissors Book press Pressing boards Glue Knife Fine Grade sandpaper Liquid ink eraser
Care handling and storage of books o Slovenly , haphazard, overcrowded condition will eventually damage the material
Care handling and storage of books Actions o o o Improvements to Environment – temperature/humidity Remove direct sunlight with UV Regular Cleaning to remove dust, dirt and other substances from handling Institute proper shelving habits Purchase materials (book ends etc. )

Improve poor shelving habits o Items not shelf in an upright position o Books placed with fore edge down will damage spine and joints o Soft cover distort o o text block pulling away Shelf packed too tight
Improve poor shelving habits o Users tend to pull the head caps to get to the book, hence damage to the spine and further damage to the item
Trolleys o The preferred method for moving books and other library materials o Books should be stacked upright o Books should not protrude beyond the edge of the trolley shelves
Trolleys o Books should not be on top of each other on the shelves or trolleys.
Shelving Oversize Items o Should be shelved on their tail or flat o Never place them on their fore-edge o o Avoid shelving short books next to tall books as the small one will not be properly be supported Do not allow the items to protrude into the aisle
