‘Mysteries and Monarchy’ Literacy This term, year 5 and 6 will be studying Myths and Legends which nicely ties in with the mystery of King Arthur. We’ll be continuing with our ‘Talk for Writing’ by Pie Corbett. Covering persuasive texts and an indepth analysis of a fiction text. Taking inspiration from Shakespeare, we will incorporate the skill of play writing and performance. This will be linked to the children’s author Laura Dockerel aka MC Dockers. Maths We will be concentrating on: • Fractions, decimals and percentages • Co-ordinates, translation and rotation • Probability SPRING 2, 2014 Year 5 and 6 Mysteries and Monacrhy Continuing our quest, we will visit Montacute House where the children will take part in various Tudor workshops. Our first Inspire Day will see all 3 classes exploring owl pellets, designing and making heraldic shields as well as exploring gases. Henry wasn’t called the exploding king for nothing! We will also be getting food, dances, music and decorations ready for our Tudor banquet, with all invited! • Perimeter, area and volume • Time - 24 hour clock All of these will have a daily problem solving element set in a real life context. We have also introduced times table Rock Stars to be played online at home. Along side this, Olympic maths will continue with the next medal ceremony in June. Parents are invited to take part as well (more details to follow). Monday night SAT’s groups will continue until Easter. Arts In DT we will be producing Tudor purses out of a variety of mediums. Also, within our Inspire morning, we will be making heraldic shields. The children will also design their own coat of arms. Humanities An in-depth look at life in Tudor times. Our learning journey will facilitate child-led learning, to enable an exploration of areas that the children find most interesting. Scientists Henry VIII was a keen hunter. We’ll be looking at how he effected the food chain as well as habitats. Also gases and micro-organisms in tribute to the exploding king! Musicians General Information Children will compose simple tunes that will be performed at the banquet. There will an opportunity to create and take part in a Tudor dance.
