• Some facts about King Arthur lived in the 5 th and early 6 th centuries AD. He was the son of Uther Pendragon, the King of Britain, and Igerma, who was actually the wife of the Duke of Tintagel. However, it was not easy for Arthur to become a king. The rules of neighboring kingdoms, who intended to get to Uther’s throne, refused to recognise the young man as the King of England marched against him. Oversea Kings Ban and Bors helped Arthur out, and that is how the era of King Arthur began.
• Arthur was married to beautiful Gwenyvere, the daughter of King Leodegrance, but they did not have children. Once, when Gwenyvere was taking a walk, she was kidnapped by Maleagant, the former Knight of the Round Table. The moment Lancelot and Gwenyvere met, they fell for each other. • When the King Arthur learnt of Queen’s affair he was very angry and ordered to arrest Lancelot with Gwenyvere.
THE MYSTERY OF THE ROUND TABLE • Plenty of surveys led scientists to believe that King Arthur’s famous Round Table was in the castle of Camelot, Chester. And Camelot was not actually a castle, but an ancient Roman amphitheater with the tale in the center. The table itself was a huge construction made of stone and wood that could accommodate about 1000 men.
THE BLACK PRINCE • Edward, the eldest son of Edward III, the Prince of wales and the first Duke of Cornwall, was a hero of the Hundred Years War and an outstanding military leader. Since the 16 th century he become well-known as the Black Prince. He became very popular at the age of 16, when he stood out from the crowd for his victories over the French. He was in command of the right wing at the Battle of Crecy, where the French army was crippled for another ten years. Later he took part in the siege of Calais and was at the head of the Great Raid in the Aquitaine-Languedoc region. He ran into the army of John the Good near Poitiers, and though the French army was five times as large as English one, the Black Prince won a landslide victory and even captured the French King.
THE NINE DAYS’ QUEEN The shortest reign in the history of England lasted from July 19, 1553, and this period turned to be a gloomy one. Lady Jane Dudley, the youngest Queen of England, the daughter of Henry Grey, the first Duke of Suffolk and the great-granddaughter of Henry VII, was only 16 years old when she became a new queen. The new Queen ascended to the throne, but was soon betrayed and proclaimed an usurper. After having spent some time in prison, Jane was executed.
ROYAL OAK DAY • Since the 17 th century, people in England celebrate the 29 th of May as the Day of Royal Oak. This fest is to commemorate the restoration of the English monarchy, dating back to 1660, when Charles II came to London. Allegedly, when the future king was defeated by Cromwell's troops, he had to hide from the soldiers looking for him. Once he hid in the branches of an oak. After Charles became the King, the oak was cut down and monarchists collected its pieces to keep as the greatest relic.
