Every country has its own traditions and customs. In Britain traditions play a very important role in the life of people. The British are proud of their traditions and keep them carefully.
Englishmen's home People all over the world know the proverb “The Englishmen’s home is his castle”. They like to live in small houses with a small garden. A typical feature of an English house is a fireplace.
Another interesting tradition is having pets. English people like domestic animals. Every family has a pet: a dog, a cat or a bird.
The British Dog Show is called Crufts. It takes place every March in Birmingham, and it is 119 years old! Crufts is gigantic. It has been recognised by the Guiness Book of Records as the largest show in the world. It lasts 4 days and attracts dog lovers from all the continents. Crufts
British believe that black ravens bring good luck to Britain. In case they leave the Tower, something bad can happen. There are six ravens at the Tower today ( three boys and three girls) Their names are Branwen, Thor, , Gwyllum, Boldric, Hugine and Munin. They are named in honour of the Scandinavian and Celtic mythical characters.
Every night for the last 700 years at 21. 53 the Tower has been locked up in the Ceremony of the Keys. The chief Yeoman Warder locks various doors ceremonially. At the ceremony the Chief Yeoman Warder comes out with a bunch of keys and an old lantern. The sentry calls: "Halt! Who comes there? " The Head warder replies: "The Keys". "Whose keys? " — asks the sentry. "Queen Elizabeth’s Keys" is the answer. After that the sentry says: "Advance, Queen Elizabeth’s Keys. Tea-lovers The English are tea-drinkers. They have tea many times a day. Some Englishmen have tea for breakfast, tea in lunch time, tea after dinner, tea at tea-time and tea after supper. Some British families have "high tea" or big tea and no supper. The Englishmen always drink tea from cups, never from glasses.
Red nose day For one day every two years, Britain goes crazy. People all over the country (even police officers, teachers and celebrities wear red clone noses, do silly things and try to earn a lot of money for charity.
Hats hats “If you want to get ahead, get a hat”, this old English proverb is quite true nowadays. People in England find a great occasion for showing hats. The opportunity to demonstrate new hats is Royal Ascot. If you want to visit this event you must have a nice hat. You can see the members of royal family and special guests.
Pancake Day is celebrated on Shrove Tuesday in spring at the beginning of Lent is a period of 40 days before Easter. Pancake Day is traditionally the last day that you can eat what you want until Easter.
Well, on this day in England families usually have pancakes for dinner. At schools the children and teachers have pancakes for school dinner, and in restaurants customers ask for pancakes, too. Pancake Day is a funny custom. It is famous for an unusual race with frying pans and pancakes.

Changing of Guards The Changing of Guards is a very beautiful tradition. Every morning tourists go to watch the ceremony at Buckingham Palace. At 11. 30 you can see the Changing of Guards in front of the Buckingham palace.
It's interesting to know that every St. Valentine's Day, thousands of people travel to a small village on Scotland's border with England. Many of them go to get married, and many more couples go through mock wedding ceremonies to "renew their marriage vows". The village is Gretna Green sometimes called Britain's wedding capital.
Every nation and every country has its own traditions and customs. Traditions make a nation special. You cannot really imagine Britain without all its customs and traditions, this integral feature of social and private life of the people living on the British Isles.
