National Context National Positive Ageing Strategy The purpose of the National Positive Ageing Strategy is to identify the provisions that must be made and the plans that must be implemented to ensure the best quality of life for older people in the Ireland of the future (Department of Health 2012)

National Context: Action Plan for Health Research 2009 -13 ‘Health research will provide us with better means to address the challenge to our society of constantly improving health well-being, in areas such as chronic disease management, the ageing of the population, reliance on drugs, lifestyle risk factors and rising costs and the more effective use of resource’

International Context ‘The world population is rapidly ageing. Between 2000 and 2050, the proportion of the world's population over 60 years will double from about 11% to 22%. The absolute number of people aged 60 years and over is expected to increase from 605 million to 2 billion over the same period’. (World Health Organisation 2012)

Programme Philosophy The programme philosophy stems from the beliefs that ageing is a positive life event and that older people benefit when communities and older people services are designed to be age-friendly. Older people are affected in many ways by how and where they live. Their ability to participate in the social, economic and cultural life of a community or residential care setting and their physical and psychological health and well being are determined by the environment in which they live.
