Registration Requirements • Must be a minimum of 18 years • Have 12 months of walking • • experience in appropriate terrain Must be a member of the British Mountaineering Council (BMC) www. thebmc. co. uk £ 15 An interest in leading groups
Training • To attend a training course you must have logged at least 20 Quality Mountain Days • Definition of QMD “The quality of a mountain day lies in a range of factors that make a positive contribution towards a person’s development and maturity as an all round mountaineer. ”
In a QMD usually some of these criteria are met • The individual takes part in the planning and leadership. • Adverse conditions may be encountered and navigation • • • skills are required away from marked paths. Experience must be in terrain and weather that is comparable to UK and Irish hills Attention is paid to safety, knowledge increased and skills practised The journey time is 5 hours or more The majority of these days will be in the UK and Ireland. It is likely that such a day for the ML Award will involve the ascent of a significant mountain.

The criteria for a SUBSIDY • A member of UBES • • and UBU as a result An active member for at least one more year (of both of above and still be in the university!) The desire to use the skills learnt and to teach others
My ML training diary Ghyll Head 26 th Aug-1 st Sept • Gyhll Head was seven days, • • allowing for a three day expedition. We got up at 8 am and started the days activity by 9 am. Evening Lectures until 9 pm most evenings Meeting lots of like minded people-really good fun!

SUNDAY Mountain day • Clothing and equipment • Group equipment • Understanding the environment • Navigation • Party management
MONDAY Rope work day • Emergency Rope work • Confidence roping • Spotting • Belaying • Anchors • Direct belays
TUESDAY River crossing • single person • group crossings • crossing with the aid of a rope Rescue techniques • Assisted movement and carries • Sweep Search
THE EXPEDITION!!! • Three day expedition • Each person • • • Navigating a leg Expedition Food Role play NIGHT NAV
Lectures in the Evenings • Weather • The upland environment • • • the legal framework and the country code Protecting the upland environment for the future Leadership Dealing with incidents
Consolidation Period • Usually a period of 12 months whereby you will complete a minimum of 40 mountain days
Assessment • Must have minimum of 40 quality mountain • • days Completed ML training course Hold a valid First Aid Certificate
