MOTOR TECHNOLOGY A PLC at Course Kylemore College

Motor Technology is a one-year Post Leaving Certificate Course. Students who successfully complete the course receive a FETAC Level 5 Certificate.
The course is taught over a thirty week period from September to May. Class is timetabled between 9: 00 am and 4: 00 pm for four days with one more day allocated for work experience placement. There are eight modules with an average of eighty hours tuition per module.
The eight modules are: • Motor Vehicle Theory • Motor Vehicle Electricity • Motor Vehicle Practice • Work Experience Placement • Electronics • Communications • Mathematics • Computer Studies
Assessment is a combination of continuous assessment, project work and final examination. Assignments are spread across the year. To receive the FETAC Level 5 Certificate students must pass all eight modules.
This is a very full course which demands complete commitment and effort. In addition to class time you must be prepared to spend considerable time in personal study, assignment and project work. Only those who engage fully will be successful.
Motor Technology is about the fundamental principles of motor engineering. It’s about gaining an understanding of the construction and operation of the major components of motor vehicles. This knowledge and understanding will allow the student to develop through further study in engineering or employment in the Motor Industry.
To be a successful student on this course you must have a keen desire to understand theory of motor engineering as well as the practical. You must be engaged at all times to understand complex concepts in Motor Vehicle Theory, Electronics, Mathematics etc. You should be interested to see how lessons learned in science class apply to engineering.
A minimum of ten days work experience placement is an essential part of the course. Students must keep a comprehensive diary and complete a number of assignments to meet the module requirements. Kylemore College has developed a network of contacts who provide these placements. However, in the present economic climate, you may be required to secure your own placement.

Students may also seek employment in various sectors of the motor industry such as: Service Parts Sales Ancillary Services For students considering a future in the Motor Industry the work experience placement provides an excellent opportunity to investigate the industry at first hand.
