Dali is one of the most famous Surrealist artists. Dalí's expansive artistic repertoire includes sculpture, photography, and film (his most famous movie is Un Chien Andalou). He also worked in collaboration with a range of artists in a variety of media.
surrealism ØSurrealism is a type of art started from the 1920 s. ØSurrealist artists liked to surprise, to provoke, to stimulate, to overturn people's expectations. ØThe Surrealists were deeply interested in dream states, in Freud, in alternative realities. ØThey also made movies, wrote books, and drew cartoons.
The Persistence of Memory (Постоянство памяти)
The surrealist piece introduced the image of the soft melting pocket watch. The orange clock at the bottom left of the painting is covered in ants. Dalí often used ants in his paintings as a symbol for death, as well as a symbol of female genitalia. It is possible to recognize a human figure in the middle of the composition; one can also see that the creature has one closed eye with several eyelashes; this also suggests that the creature is in a dream state.
Dali sometimes referred to his paintings as "handpainted dream photographs". The painting depicting the famous 'melting clocks' or 'melting watches' images is a very small, cabinetsize picture.
The Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory (Распад Постоянства Памяти)
It was originally known as The Chromosome of a Highly-coloured Fish's Eye Starting the Harmonious Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory. Disintegration depicts what is occurring both above and below the water's surface.
The distorted human visage from the original painting is beginning to morph or would better to say o vanish. However, to Dalí, the fish was a symbol of life.
Geopoliticus Child Watching the Birth of a New Man
The canvas is painted by the artist in a difficult time for the whole world: in 1943. Generally, an egg is an ancient symbol of the universe and the birth of new life. It's obvious that the birth costs him efforts and brings him pain.
The painting is thought to show the man rising out of the "new" nation, United States, which was in the process of becoming a new world power.
Salvador Dali is not an ordinary artist but really a consummate technician. His works frequently display a juxtaposition of ordinary objects in an unusual context, giving new meanings to familiar things.
