Moscow State University Lomonosov
Foundation Moscow State University was established in 1755. It was founded to arouse interest and the need of getting higher education in the Russian Empire. The country was in need of scientific education and comprehensively well-educated and literate people in order to raise the country to a high level, overtaking the European countries. Empress Elizaveta Petrovna • The project of Moscow State University creation was signed by the Empress Elizaveta on January 14, 1755. • The university had its own court, all the teachers, students were exempt from military service, taxes and other burdens. • The first lectures were held on April 26. • January 25 is now celebrated as Students' Day in Russia.
Mikhail Lomonosov • Mikhail Vasilyevich Lomonosov was a Russian polymath, who greatly contributed to the establishment of the University. • He studied natural science, chemistry, physics, mineralogy, history, art, philology, optical devices and others. • Lomonosov was also a poet and influenced the formation of the modern Russian literary language.
th 19 century In the early 19 th century Moscow University attracted free-thinking people: ( V. G. Belinsky, A. I. Gertsen, N. P. Ogaryov, N. V. Stankevitch) Young people united to discuss the future of Russia. The traditions of fraternity were supported and cultivated in the University.
Days of Revolution In the revolutionary events of 1905 -1907 Moscow University students were against the monarchy. Students did not have to pay tuition fees. Many students and professors, well-known scientists found it difficult to accept the new situation in the country and left.
World War the 2 nd During the war the University continued the research: in aircraft development and navigation, in the accuracy of artillery fire. Over 5000 University students, instructors, professors and staff fought in the war. To honor over 3000 people Moscow University lost during the war a memorial was erected on campus in 1975.

MSU today University is a major center of learning and research as well as an important cultural center. 41 faculties, 15 research institutes, 4 museums, 6 local branches in Russia and abroad, about 380 departments, the Science Park, the Botanical Gardens, The Library, the University Publishing House, a recreational center and a boarding school for talented children. over 140 distance learning programs.
Faculty of Foreign Languages and Area Studies • Our faculty was founded in 1988 • Graduates of the Faculty know the culture, history, customs and traditions of the countries the languages they are studying. • The ability to maintain Intercultural communications is the key point in teaching foreign languages at our department.
The “Flowerbed” • The first organized meeting with the first-year students of the year. • It is traditionally held at the backyard of the faculty next to the flowerbed. • Great opportunity for the freshmen and exchange students to get to know the main people of the faculty.
Initiation into Students • in September freshmen of our Faculty are initiated into students. • they spend a day in a country-house of the MSU. • enter different competitions, organized by older students. • get T-shirts and caps with the logo of the Faculty. • give an oath of Allegiance to the Faculty and promise to study well.
Birthday of our Faculty This year our Faculty will be 25 years. In November we always have a big concert to celebrate the Faculty’s Birthday. Students and professors perform songs, poems, dances or sketches.
