Quote of the Day 8/25/05 2 There is a division in the student population between those who go to college to learn and those who go to college to earn a diploma. - J. Blau (University of Washington graduate student, in a letter to the editor, Chronicle of Higher Education, May 24, 2002) A parable

Registration Materials: 5 Pages n Orange Page l n n My current comments/recommendations about your schedule White Page (called a white-print) l l n This presentation (for reference) Green Page l n The Schedule Planning form that you returned to me; I have highlighted the Item letters in green (for good) and red (for questionable) Blue Page l CMU credit from AP/IB/Cambridge, credit by exam (e. g. , 21 -127), and transfer credit (the same information that you can get via SIO) If you need credit to register for a course today, I can provide it during your registration session; for any other missing credit, see me during the first few weeks of the semester Purple Page l 8/25/05 4 A survey that you will complete about the advising/registration process If you don’t have these materials, get them from the OCs, now!

Reading the Green Page n IC/CSW Course l l n I have indicated the course that you can (and should) register for. Science/Engineering and Humanities Courses l n All students not placing out must register for section G, H, I, or J (lecture 3) If you place out, you may register for it (if you want to take DM at CMU) Math Course l n Most students will take one programming course, either 15 -100, 15 -200, 15 -113, or 15 -211; see me if you disagree with the recommendation. Discrete Math Course: 21 -127 l n All students must register for both these courses (no conflicts with IC!) There is only one IC; there are many 1 st semester CSWs to choose from Programming Course l n 8/25/05 6 I have indicated the course you wanted to register for (with a comment). Total Units –based on my recommendation/your schedule Final Comments
Registration Advice n Unit Total must be between 36 and 57 (inclusive) l l n n n Ensure that you can drop one course and still be above 36 So, 45 units is a reasonable minimum, because a typical course is 9 units SCS receives about 75 slots for 76 -101 each semester l n Most students want to take this course, so if you are in the second half of the queue numbers, plan on taking some other humanities course in the fall For all courses, avoid Section W (building MSB). It is in Qatar! You may take a course, even if you have AP/other credit for it. A Typical Schedule Includes l l 2 seminars: IC/CSW (15 -128/99 -101) 5 academic: programming, discrete/another math, science, humanities s n 8/25/05 7 If you play a varsity sport, I suggest you register for only 4 academics You may change your registration after today l l But, non-reserved slots will disappear fast, as HSS students register and upperclass students return and begin tinkering with their schedules Avoid classes with (long) wait lists. If you are waitlisted, attend class the first day. Talk to the teacher before/after class: be polite, sincere, etc.
Building a Schedule n n Poll: How many of you have used the Pulse Scheduler already? OC Demos l l n Building a schedule using Pulse Scheduler/Tartan Schedule. Man (Jim Puls) Registering using OLR (Josh Hailpern) Demos will include use of waitlists, mistakes/corrections, etc. l l n Watch closely I, and many of the OCs, will be in the room to help when you register Levels of Accomplishment for Today l Minimal : Register for the IC, a programming course, 21 -127 s l l l n 8/25/05 8 SCS guarantees you a slot in each of these courses Basic Most All : Minimal + a CSW : Basic + a math and science course (in a typical schedule) : Most + plus a humanities course and anything special I’m available on Friday from 1 pm-4 pm, for final registration help
The Process: Groups and Stations n Registration by Queue Number (on the green page) l l l n Group A: 11 am-Registration, 12 pm-Lunch, 1 pm-Connecting… Group B: 11 am-Connecting …, 12 pm-Registration, 1 pm-Lunch Group C: 11 am-Lunch, 12 pm-Connecting…, 1 pm-Registration: Wean Hall 5419 A/5419 B l n Group A: 1 - 50 Group B: 51 - 100 Group C: 100 - 143 Schedule for Groups: 3 Stations l n 8/25/05 9 When it is your time to register, line up in queue order outside the door When a machine is available, the next student will be called to enter If you are not present and miss your turn, register with Rich on Friday Detach and fill out your survey when done; put it in the box before leaving Lunch: Pickup in Wean 53? ? : Eat outside Connecting with CMU (Wean Hall 5403)
Academic Integrity: Registration n n I will discuss Academic Integrity in more detail in the afternoon For registration, note that I will consider it an academic violation if you register (typically on a portable –but any other machine as well) before the time indicated by your queue number l l n n l l n I have set all SCS students to be able to register as of about 10 am But don’t do so until your appointed time There all sorts of electronic time-stamps placed on things you do with computers, so we can discover when you registered If we discover that you registered before the time indicated by your queue number l n 8/25/05 10 It will be reported to the Dean of Student Affairs I personally will deregister you from all your courses You’ll have to register again, from scratch, after everyone else finishes If you have already registered, and you tell me immediately, we can work something out (but tell me immediately). This will ensure fairness. Have a nice day
OCs Recommendations: Q/A n n All the “adults” will leave the room The OCs will supply recommendations about the scheduling process, and about individual courses, instructors, etc. At the end, they will have a question and answer period Arrive at your designated Group activity by 11: 15 8/25/05 11
