Modal Verbs
CAN l l l 1)Physical or mental ability (физическая, умственная возможность) He can lift this box. He could draw well when he was a child. 2)possibility ( возможность) You can save your money by putting it in the bank. 3) asking for permission, suggestion (просьба о разрешении, предложение ) Could you get me a glass of water? ( could –не могли бы вы – is more polite and formal than can) Can I help you? CAN We use «to be able to» (not could) in the meaning «managed to» (смог, удалось) to show that someone had the ability to do something in a particular situation in the past (однократное действие в определенной ситуации). We use “could” to show that someone had the ability to do something repeatedly in the past (неоднократное действие в прошлом). Compare: He could read when he was 5. (мог ) The fire spread quickly but we were able to escape. (смогли, нам удалось в конкретной ситуации) l We use the negative form couldn’t for both cases. CAN in the meaning of Possibility -possibility in the present or in the past (возможность, вероятность) John is late. He could be stuck in traffic. The driver could have been killed. (Luckily, he wasn’t) l - doubt or surprise (сомнение или удивление) – неужели (? ) Сan he know it? Can he have said it? l - negative assumption (невероятность - не может быть, чтобы ( -) It can’t be true. You сan’t have done it. l

MAY/MIGHT l l l l l )asking for permission (просьба –могу ли я? (may like could is more polite than can, might is a very formal form ) May I see your garden, please? Might I have a look at this report? giving or refusing permission (разрешение или запрет(may is more formal, usually used in written reports)We use may/may not, but not might/might not. You may not leave your luggage here. Possible actions in the future (возможные действия в будущем – возможно, может быть) I may go to Italy.
