The pattern
Listening
LISTENING PART SUMMARY ( 30 minutes vs. 40 questions) 1 - a conversation 2 - a monologue or an between two people interview on a general or or social theme 3 – a conversation 4 - a talk or lecture between up to four on a theme of speakers on an general academic educational or training interest theme
Golden rules 1. Each section is heard ONCE. 2. The most difficult part is CONCENTRATION. 3. Before you start listening to each section you will be given time to READ the TASK AND TEXT.
Reading
READING PART SUMMARY • The academic reading module takes 60 minutes. • There are 3 texts* with a total of 15002500 words (4, 5 A 4 pages). • There are usually 40 questions*.
GOLDEN RULES 1. If you have difficulties with a question, SKIP it! Use random choice. 2. You do not need to read the text in details to answer the questions. Learn to SKIM texts fast. 3. 60 min=40 Qs. 4. Questions generally follow the order of the information in the text.
Writing
WRITING PART SUMMARY Task 1 ( 20 minutes) You write a report about a graph, table, bar chart or diagram, using a minimum of 150 words. Ø You are marked on task completion and use of a range of vocabulary and grammar, organization and development Task 2 ( 40 minutes) You write an essay discussing an argument, opinion or a point of view. Ø You are marked on use of a range of vocabulary and grammar, organization and development and how you respond to the task.
Golden rules 1. Do Task 1 first. There is a reason why it is Task 1! It needs more concentration. 2. Remember that Task 2 weights double. 3. Start by writing an outline. 4. Think about paragraphing. ( Task 1 =3; Task 2 = 5)
Speaking
SPEAKING PART SUMMARY ( 11 -14 minutes) • PART 1 4 -5 minutes • PART 2 3 -4 minutes Examiner introduces him/herself you prepare and give a short talk of 1 -2 minutes on a given and ask you questions about subject yourself e. g. What country would you like e. g. What is your major? to visit and why? • PART 3 4 -5 minutes you and examiner have a discussion linked to the subject from Part 2 e. g. What factors influence tourism in your country?
Golden rules • Smile and be relaxed. • Do not be put off by the tape recorder in the roam. It is there to help you not the Examiner! • Remember that the adrenaline produced by your nervous feelings actually helps you to perform better. • Get into the right mod by reading or listening to something in English before your test. • Use a wide range of vocabulary. People generally use less than they know when they speak. Practice to activate what you know. • Practice speaking clearly. This does not mean slowly, but naturally and evenly.
Completing the answer sheet • Fill in the answer sheet carefully. Use a pencil. • Write clearly. Give only one answer unless the instructions require more. • Write in the correct spaces and keep within them. • Check your spelling, especially common words and follow the word limit. • Skim/check your answers when you finish. Choose answers at random to check, or check them backwards. Make sure the grammar is correct where necessary
How is the exam marked? • 9 bands • Each part is evaluated separately and the average is calculated; • 3 rd-year student is supposed to be 5 -5. 5 to reach 6. 5 by the end of the English language course at MISi. S. •
What to expect on test day? A finger print scan A photograph of each candidate
You shall bring… A pen, pencil, sharpener, eraser and your passport (student’s ID) will be needed for the examination. Also, please take note of your candidate number, which is contained in your examination schedule. You will need this number to register for all parts of your examination.
REMEMBER! • • • Come 40 minutes BEFORE the exam start to register. For the written module registration for the exam will take place on the first floor near the LIBRARY. You will need your passport or student’s ID. After the registration each student is accompanied to the exam room where s/he find the seat marked by his identification number. For the speaking module registration will be taking place on 10 th floor. Details will be available later.
Procedures • Candidates will not be able to leave the room until the exam is over. • On the table a candidate can have a bottle of water, medication, if necessary. • Activities are restricted to those related to the IELTS exam. Talking, smoking, eating, drinking, and of course, cheating, are all prohibited.
