Lieutenant-general Mikhail Timofeyevich Kalashnikov was a Russian general and a small arms designer, most famous for developing the AK-47 assault rifle.
Early life Kalashnikov was born in Kurya, Altai Krai, Russian SFSR. In his youth, Mikhail suffered from various illnesses and nearly died when he was six. Kalashnikov's parents were peasants, but, after deportation to Tomsk Oblast, had to unite farming with hunting, and thus Mikhail frequently used his father's rifle at that time.
In 1938, he was conscripted into the Red Army. Because of he was not tall and had some engineering skills he was assigned as a tank mechanic, and later became a tank leader. Kalashnikov was the commander of the T-34.
In 1944, he designed a gasoperated carbine for the new 7. 62 x 39 mm cartridge. This weapon, influenced by the M 1 Garand rifle, lost to the new Simonov carbine which would be eventually adopted as the SKS.
Later career Since 1949, Mikhail Kalashnikov lived and worked in Izhevsk, Udmurtia.
During his career, he created the basic design for a family of weapons. The AKM (improved Kalashnikov machine carbine) first appeared in 1963, it was lighter and cheaper to produce due to the use of a die steel receiver.
Approximately 100 million AK-47 assault rifles had been produced at Izhmash by 2009, the official manufacturer of AK-47 in Russia.
On 17 November 2013, Kalashnikov was taken to one of Izhevsk hospitals. He died there on 23 December 2013 after a long illness.
