The American Board for Certification for Teacher Excellence (ABCTE) is a nonpartisan non-profit 501(c)3 organization established by the United States Department of Education. South Carolina General Assembly passed the ABCTE Excellence Act in June 2007. We currently have 52 ABCTE certified educators teaching in the content areas of: Biology Chemistry English Mathematics Physics Science And the recently added content areas of: Middle Level Science Middle Level Language Arts Middle Level Mathematics

Steps and Requirements • Must have earned at least a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college/university • Successfully complete the ABCTE Certification Online Program * Current cost of program is $2, 100 * Completion of program is self-paced * Achieve passing scores on the content specific exam and the practical teaching knowledge exam * Request passing scores be submitted to our office

Alternative Certificate to Professional • At the completion of your application process you will receive your Statement of Eligibility • Once employed you must teach successfully for three academic years in a South Carolina public or charter school (yearly renewal) • Successfully complete the induction and summative ADEPT evaluation requirements • Pass the Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) pedagogy exam for grades 9 -12

Teach for America’s partnership with South Carolina was established in 2011. There are currently 160 Corps Members servicing 14 rural school districts which includes Orangeburg and the Pee Dee along Interstate 95 and in the Low Country including Colleton and Berkeley Counties. Teach for America recruits rising seniors, new graduates, and professionals with diverse backgrounds, a passion for education, and an understanding of the challenges low income students face in obtaining an excellent educations.

Teach For America – South Carolina recently launched Rise. SC, an initiative to build partnerships throughout the state, primarily on university and College campuses and with professional organizations to increase the number of corps members with South Carolina ties who are committed to remaining in South Carolina.

PACE • Based on the need for qualified teachers • South Carolina’s shortage areas • Leads to Professional Certification

PACE in South Carolina • For the past three years, 7 -10% of new hires were first year PACE participants • Currently there about 900 PACE participants in South Carolina

PACE Subjects • agriculture • art • business education • dance • emotionally disabled (This is the only special education area that is part of the alternative certification program in any district in South Carolina. ) • English (secondary) • family and consumer sciences • foreign languages (Spanish, French, German, and Latin) • health • history (secondary) • industrial technology • mathematics (secondary) • media specialist (library science) • middle level areas (language arts, mathematics, science, social studies) • music • physical education • science (secondary biology, chemistry, physics) • social studies • theatre

PACE Eligibility Requirements • Earned bachelor’s degree in content area • A passing score on the required Praxis examinations • Two years of full-time work experience or earned masters degree

To Academically Qualify for a PACE content area • Have a Major in a PACE content area from a regionally accredited college or university • Have 30 hours in a PACE content area with 21 of the 30 hours at 300 level or above • Have 24 graduate hours in the content area

Steps to Certification Six steps to initial certification

Step One • Attend a PACE Information Session • Attain a free transcript evaluation ØMajor Equivalency Statement may be necessary • Submit certification application to State Department of Education • Receive letter indicating approved academic area(s)

Step Two When signing up for Praxis • www. ets. org • Refer to South Carolina required examinations • Decide on middle level vs. secondary Praxis • Special education requires three praxis • SC PRAXIS Code: 8108

Step Three • Finalize certification application

PACE • PACE is a three year program

Year One • Participant starts teaching • Participant receives mentoring and support from the district induction team • Participant completes four days of PACE seminars • Participant can start college coursework

Following Year One • Participant completes 10 -day in-service seminar (June) • District Submits Confirmation of Employment for second year of teaching

Year Two • Participant completes final two days of PACE seminars • Participant continues college coursework • Participant takes the Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) examination • Participant goes through formal evaluation (ADEPT, SAFE-T, etc. )

Year Three • • • Participant successfully completes PACE training Participant completes graduate coursework Participant passes PLT Participant successfully completes state evaluation Participant successfully completes three years of teaching while in the program • Requests professional teaching License
