The Maya is a Mesoamerican civilization, noted for the only known fully developed written language of the pre-Columbian Americas, as well as for its art, architecture, and mathematical and astronomical systems.
Advances such as writing, epigraphy, and the calendar did not originate with the Maya; however, their civilization fully developed them. Maya influence can be detected from Honduras, Guatemala, Northern El Salvador and to as far as central Mexico, more than 1, 000 km (620 mi) from the Maya area. Many outside influences are found in Maya art and architecture, which are thought to result from trade and cultural exchange rather than direct external conquest.
The Maya peoples never disappeared, neither at the time of the Classic period decline nor with the arrival of the Spanish conquistadores and the subsequent Spanish colonization of the Americas.
The main garment of men was a loincloth. Women's clothes consisted of two main items: a long dress (cube), which began overa chest, leaving open the shoulders, or (as, for example, in the Yucatan) is a rectangular piece of cloth with slits for the arms and head, and petticoat.
For Maya art, which found expression in stone sculpture and bas-reliefs, works of finesculpture, paintings on the walls and ceramics, characterized by religious andmythological themes, embodied in the stylized images of the grotesque.

The counting system of the Maya was based not on the familiar decimal system, and the spread of Mesoamerican cultures vigesimal. The origins lie in the method of counting, which were used not only ten fingers, ten toes and feet. Maya had a complex and fairly accurate for its time, a system of calendars.
The myth is based on the fact that some of the inscriptions at Palenque Temple of the Cross (which was located one of the observatories), contain information that the 1508 calendar year (Haab) correspond to the 1507 solar years. Thus, the lengthcalculated by astronomers the Maya solar year is obtained ≈ 365, 242203 days, which more closely matches the period of circulation of the Earth around the Sun than the duration of the year in the Gregorian calendar - 365. 2425 days.
This calendar is cut off December 21, 2012.
