Maricopa Community Colleges
Maricopa County is one of the fastest growing population areas in United States.
Phoenix continues to grow. . .
. . . in size and density.
and the rapidly expanding suburban communities continue to attract people.
The new influx of residents brings a demand for. . .
. . . community college services.
By 2012, MCCD could be serving. . .
. . . 425, 000 students annually.
What problems were we trying to solve? 1. Disjointed database systems 2. Too much time “learning” the systems 3. Lack of communication and collaboration 4. Too many points of access 5. Concern of handling user growth and data integrity 6. Software and hardware too inflexible 7. Lack of integration for all MCC locations
Buy or Build the Portal? • Buy – Can it integrate all tools desired? – What’s the budget? • Build – Built upon java – Stable of programmers – Production environment Critical Success Factor
Critical Success factor The magic happens behind the scenes Partnering with industry leaders (Sun, Netscape, Oracle, Web. CT, etc. )
ü Problem 1: Disjointed systems ü Solution: Integrate our database systems Student Information System Oracle Human Resources Critical Success Factor

ü Problem 2: Too much time “learning” the systems ü Solution: Shorten the learning curve with integrated applications Comfort Level Semester End
ü Problem 3: Lack of communication and collaboration ü Solution: Create easy-to-use communication tools on the portal For example…
Class rosters with email addresses
ü Problem 4: Too many points of access ü Solution: Create single point of entry and easy-to-use interface
ü Problem 5: Concern of handling user growth and data integrity ü Solution: Build in scalability, reliability, and security
ü Problem 6: Software and hardware too inflexible ü Solution: Use industry standards
ü Problem 7: Inconsistent application of instructional tools ü Solution: ü Faculty selection of tools by section ü Student receives instant authorization to tools by enrolling in section ü Upon login to My. MCC Portal, students gain access to course tools regardless of their location
ü Problem 8: Network is impersonal ü Solution: Provide individualized (personalized) access • Desktop follows person, not machine – Course information – Email, bookmarks, & cookies – Web (drive) space • Role in college – Student (grouped by section number) – Employee • Group Membership (ability to see certain applications in portal, e. g. student lookup) –public safety example Example
