Parks is most famous for what she did on December 1, 1955. Rosa Parks said no to give up her seat on the bus. At that time, it was illegal for a black person to have a seat when a white person did not
She was arrested As a result, she was arrested, and Martin Luther King became her attorney. People in Montgomery, Alabama were so angry about her arrest that they decided to take action. So, they boycotted the buses.
Boycott After Rosa Parks's incident, 42, 000 black people, residents of Montgomery, stopped taking buses. Instead, they took taxis, gave each other lifts and walked. Because of this the Montgomery Bus Company lost a lot of money.
The MIA had three demands. They wanted polite treatment on buses and black drivers for routes in black neighborhoods. In addition, they were willing to sit in the back of the bus, as long as they did not have to give up their seats to whites.
Rosa lost her job and was unable to get another one in Montgomery. She and Raymond moved to Virginia.
During her lifetime she was awarded many honors for her courageous stand. There was the Rosa Parks Peace Prize in 1994, the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1996, and the Congressional Gold Medal in 1999. A library and museum is dedicated to her in Montgomery, Alabama.
Rosa Parks died on 24. October 2005, but she is still a very important figure in the Negro population of the United States. Her casket was placed in the rotunda of the United States Capitol for two days. This is an honor usually only reserved for Presidents when they die. People waited in line for pay their respects.
Today people of all color can sit wherever they wish on buses throughout the nation due to the courage and determination of one woman, Rosa Parks.
