Margate is a very popular sea side resort

Margate is a very popular sea side resort, and most of it’s money comes from tourism. Many houses, hotels and shops are build along the seafront, these buildings are at risk from coastal erosion and flooding. There is 5000 m of coast to protect.

Selford Ness is a very rural area with only a few farms and a natural reserve. The cliffs were originally protected with gabion baskets but these are now old and broken. There is 9000 m of coast to protect.

Keatingborough is a town build on the top of very steep cliffs. Keatingborough council is looking to build coastal defences to protect the housing estate nearest the edge of the cliff, this will require 800 meters of defences. They don’t have much money and so are looking for a cheap but effective option.

St. Martin’s is a small but popular sandy beach in the south of England. In the summer months it gets a lot of tourists, who bring in lots of money to the local village. On the sea front there is a small tea shop, car park and lifeboat station. Villages are worried that in the winter storms could flood these buildings and cause a lot of damage. There is 2000 m of coast to protect.

Toadhall is a village build on cliffs above 3000 m of coastline. Some of the villagers have been losing parts of their gardens due to the cliffs collapsing during violent storms. This is caused by the waves hitting the base of the cliff. They have saved up a small amount of money to build defences but will need to spend as little money as possible.

Huffpool is a very popular seaside resort with a very long and wide sandy beach. Locals have noticed that the beach at one end is getting smaller and this means that waves sometimes reach the cliffs and erode them. There is a war memorial on top of the cliffs and the locals want to protect it. The beach is popular with kite surfers, who need the full length of the beach. There is 4000 m of coast to protect.

Kentish Harbour is a small fishing town in the north of England with a small beach popular with local families. They want to protect the town from coastal erosion and already have a small sea wall; sometimes the waves reach above the sea wall. They do not know if they should replace the sea wall with another one or build other defences. Further down the coast from Kentish Harbour is a large power station protected by a natural beach and rock armour. There is 4000 m of coastline to protect.
