Maintenance management & reliability engineering Ray Beebe
What our MRE students say…. 4 Without my qualifications from your course I would not have achieved this career move 4 Just being enrolled was enough to help me get my latest job 4 The Graduate Certificate I completed last year was instrumental in helping me win the job of Production Supervisor at a new gas plant. A great opportunity for further advancement, apart from about $40 K increase in salary"
4 I want to thank you for your time and effort in helping solve my crisis. I know that you have many students, but you seemed to understand what this problem meant to me, as an individual. "Within the two years from start of enrolment I have gone from a project 2 IC co-ordinator to a maintenance superintendent, adding around $35 K to my salary. Your masters program has been a big contributor to this. The content is the underlying factor with which individuals can build the confidence needed to take the next step". 4
• Australia’s largest university • Founded 1958, merged 1990 with colleges dating from 1920 s • 8 campuses, incl. overseas: Malaysia, South Africa, + Centres in Prato, Italy and London, UK • 52 000+ students: 7500 of these studying off-campus in 50 countries
Faculty of Engineering (On 2 campuses) Electrical & Computing Civil Mechanical (incls Industrial) Chemical School of Physics and Materials Engineering & Science Malaysia School of Applied Sciences and Engineering Gippsland Campus runs Engineering programs: Bachelor of Civil and Environmental Engineering MM&RE postgrad programs.
Monash and M&RE 4 1984 - 1998: Dept. Mech. Eng (Clayton) - Centre for Machine Condition Monitoring (many Ph. Ds, Master’s degrees). 4 1985 - now: School of Applied Sciences and Engineering (Gippsland): off-campus programs 4 2001 – now: Dept. Civ. Eng PG programs in infrastructure maintenance 4 1990 > now: Dept Elec Eng - HV electrical condition monitoring
4 2000: BHPBilliton-Monash Maintenance Technology Institute (Caulfield Campus). Consulting and research. 4 2003: CRC for Integrated Engineering Asset Management: research and teaching contribution. 4 1992 > now: SASE (Gippsland): some individual research projects; book#2, papers at conferences, local, China, South Africa, USA: ACSIM, ICOMS, COMADEM, MARCON, SMRP, MFPT, Clarion, IMC. etc. ,
Why Australia? “Australia and South Africa lead the world in maintenance engineering practice- maybe due to their long distance from capital equipment sources” - The late John Moubray, RCM guru 2001
“The need is there, the time is now!” (Dupont 2000) • Customers not all located in capital cities, nor near a university campus • Off campus learning is the only feasible way to meet need for further knowledge and skills
“Flexible learning is private learning based on course materials, providing access to teaching staff and two-way communication. “Self-motivation is required, but the integration with the work scene leads to a higher capability outcome than if classroom-based” -Townsend , P. and Cairns, L. (2003), Developing the Global Manager using a Capability Framework, International Journal of Management Learning, Vol. 34(3), p. 333 -347 -(Ray’s comment: it is NOT a correspondence course)
· Teaching staff: academics plus practising engineers (international experience): Assoc. Prof Yousef Ibrahim (Dr) Dr Emile Eerens Ray Beebe Adrian Stephan Andrew Kirkness Dr Brian Jenney Dr Kyoumars Bahrami
· Study materials mostly paper-based (preferred by students) Unit Guide: outline, admin details Unit Book: study guides Reader (some units): selected papers. Textbook (some units) Some units – CD, DVD.
· Access to Library resources: extensive increase in on-line stuff is ongoing · Assessment by assignment and examinations (run anywhere) · Contact between students and staff is mostly via e-mail, sometimes by phone. (All need to remember time zones!)
Graduate Certificate in Reliability Engineering 4 4 units - 1 year (but can do as few as one a year) 4 Entry available to graduates, TAFE# Diplomates (and others on passing of two units “not-for-degree” with 65%+) 4 NO residential component. 4 Pd. M etc. NOT included – is in other programs
Units in the Graduate Certificate in Reliability Engineering 4 Basic quantitative skills for reliability engineering 4 Understanding reliability 4 Reliability applications 4 Advanced reliability
Graduate Certificate in Maintenance Management 4 4 units - 1 year (same content as first year of Grad. Dip and usual Master’s) 4 Entry open to non-graduates on passing of two units not-for-degree with 65%+, with advanced standing (i. e. units done are credited). 4 Residential School (3. 5 days).
Units in the Graduate Certificate in Maintenance Management 4 Terotechnology and life cycle costs 4 Maintenance management 4 Industrial techniques in maintenance management 4 Asset management techniques
Graduate Diploma in Engineering Maintenance Management 4 8 units - 2 years (first year same as Master’s) 4 Entry available to new BE graduates (without Hons), TAFE diplomates, and holders of a Graduate Certificate who gained 65% grades 4 2 Residential Schools - 1 each year (2 in total)
Units in the Graduate Diploma in Engineering Maintenance Management 4 First 4 units same as for Grad. Cert. Maint. Mgt and Master’s) 4 Machine condition monitoring and fault diagnosis 4 Quantitative techniques for asset management 4 Risk Engineering 4 MRE Project
Master of Maintenance and Reliability Engineering 4 8 units for Honours graduates (or BE + Hons equivalent experience). Units usually same as either Grad. Cert, then MRE Project plus choice of 3 others. 412 units for other engineers, and to holders of Graduate Diploma who got 65% average grades. 4 Maximum of 2 Residential Schools (one per year).
Monash MRE today 4 86 Master’s graduates 4 266 Graduate Diploma 4 135 Grad. Cert. Maint. Mgt 4 63 Grad. Cert. Rel. Eng. 4 In 2005, we had 150 students from 14 countries, mostly from Australia, with 37 in North America. For 2006, 198!
Offshore - North America 4 Collaboration Agreement with University of Tennessee, Maintenance & Reliability Center 4 UT do local marketing & promotion, enrolment processing, handle fees. 4 Locally-organised Residential School at Knoxville (4 days), led by Monash staff , supported by UT people 4 Student numbers increasing from first year in 2000 - further growth each year 4 Approaches from Egypt, Malaysia
Web-enhanced 4 Monash University Studies On-line (MUSO): with the Web. CT VISTA platform 4 All MMRE units have web-enhanced delivery (mixed success reported in world with fully online studies) 4 Responses to Learning Activities given in print Unit Book 4 Self-assessment Tasks done on MUSO, with answers (but not graded). 4 Home page for a unit – next slide
4 All assignments are submitted by email (except one done by handwriting, faxed or scanned and emailed). 4 Standard filename protocol used 4 Unit Adviser gives feedback and grading via email; some papermail back to student 4 All units but three have an examination
Residential Schools 4 Arrangements regularly reviewed 4 Seen as essential, but Web-enhanced method can give some of the benefits 4 Every School does not have specific unit content; not all staff necessarily take part.

More student comments: 4 I won a position as Reliability Specialist at X based on my experience, and also because of my proposal for reliability improvement based heavily on my studies. 4 My selection to the corporate maintenance review team was largely due to being a MMRE student.
4 and… OECD report Sep 2005: “each extra year of postgraduate study is associated with increased salary and associated employment, plus better mental and physical health”. Don’t delay! Ask today!
