Luxulyan Valley Project Summary • £ 4. 6 million partnership project led by Cornwall Council • Internationally important site within the World Heritage Site designated area • Integrated Heritage Restoration & Renewable Energy Project • Deliver significant benefits for local community and visitors to the Council’s Luxulyan Valley countryside site • Hydro electric power generation which is estimated to provide revenue budget savings or additional income to Cornwall Council for a minimum of 20 years

The Treffry Viaduct, and the Luxulyan Valley’s oak woodland. The Valley is one of Cornwall’s most popular countryside sites.

Luxulyan Valley Fowey Consols Leat with footpath alongside Treffry Viaduct, with footpath alongside Fowey Consols Leat in foreground There are 2. 7 miles of leats, which supply water to power the Council’s HEP turbine. The adjacent footpaths provide picturesque walks.

Luxulyan Valley Treffry Viaduct – also an aqueduct The Treffry Viaduct carries Carmears Leat, and the aqueduct channel has leaked for many years causing structural damage. The Viaduct is a Scheduled Monument owned by Cornwall Heritage Trust, and is on English Heritage’s Heritage at Risk Register as Priority A. Luxulyan Valley Leat Structures The leats require new water control structures and bank strengthening to make them more resilient; and works to meet Environment Agency abstraction licence conditions

Luxulyan Valley Existing Hydro Electric Turbine The existing HEP turbine is nearing the end of its life; and much associated electrical equipment needs replacing for safety reasons. It is much better value to install a new HEP turbine which can be remotely monitored and which will generate more power.

Luxulyan Valley Project Development work already completed Much initial project development work has already been completed: • Condition Survey of Viaduct & the leats • Structural Engineering Report and Hydrological Assessment of Viaduct & the leats • Outline Specification and Sketch Drawings for Viaduct & the leats • Cost Plan for Viaduct & the leats prepared by QS • Heritage Lottery Fund Round 1 pass • Feasibility studies and options appraisal for new HEP turbine

Luxulyan Valley Project Proposed Timetable Date Project Development Phase Dec 2015 – Dec 2016 HLF Round 2 bid submission 9 December 2016 HLF Round 2 bid decision March 2017 Delivery Phase for main capital works April 2017 – May 2018 Full completion of project December 2019

Luxulyan Valley - HLF Funded Project Partners It is proposed that the HLF funded project would be a partnership between: • Cornwall Council (Lead Partner) and • Cornwall Heritage Trust And also third party agreements for the Delivery Phase between the Council and: • CORMAC Solutions (for the part-time Ranger post) • Friends of Luxulyan Valley (for interpretation, events and volunteer involvement) • Restormel Arts (for a community play) • Wheal Martyn Trust (for the World Heritage Site Area Centre interpretation about the Luxulyan Valley at Wheal Martyn)
