T IS IT? WHA Los Angeles – the most populous city in California and the second – most populous city in USA.

HISTORY Los Angeles City Hall Los Angeles was founded on September 4, 1781, by Spanish governor Felipe de Neve. It became a part of Mexico in 1821 following the Mexican War of Independence. In 1848, at the end of the Mexican - American War, Los Angeles and the rest of California were purchased and became a part of United States.

EARTHQUAKES Los Angeles is subject to earthquakes due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire. The geologic instability has produced numerous faults, which cause approximately 10, 000 earthquakes annually in Southern California. One of the major faults is the San Andreas Fault. Located at the boundary between the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate, it is predicted to be the source of Southern California's next big earthquake.

POLLUTION L. A. : one of the most polluted cities in the world. At the time, when the smoky fog appears in L. A. people must stay at home.

POLICE DEPARTMENT • L. A. P. D. has its own history. The first specific Los Angeles police force was founded in 1853 as the Los Angeles Rangers, a volunteer force that assisted the existing County forces. The Rangers were soon succeeded by the Los Angeles City Guards, another volunteer group.
