Long haul 10 G Ethernet Dark fiber tests in Denmark Presented by Mikkel Olesen, CERN
l Part of the IST ESTA project (Ethernet Switching at 10 G and Above) l Project members l COM institute at Technical University of Denmark l CERN in Geneva l BATM in Israel
Agenda Goals l DAREnet dark fibers in Denmark l Equipment l Lab experiments at COM/DTU l Field tests, used setup’s and results l Conclusion l Future work and use l Questions? l Monday, August 25, 2003 Long haul 10 G Ethernet 3
Goals l Examine the possibility to use standard 10 G Ethernet LAN equipment for longhaul WAN transmission – – Using DAREnet’s 250 km SMF link between Odense and Lyngby If possible find a setup that has a BER below 1 E-12 which is the 802. 3 ae objective Use standard NIC’s and aggregating switch's to verify link with real Ethernet traffic Measure the setup’s power penalty Monday, August 25, 2003 Long haul 10 G Ethernet 4
DAREnet fiber in Denmark l The 252 km of standard SMF dark fiber between Odense and Lyngby l Includes three points for possible amplification, filtering etc. in Nyborg, Næstved and Taastrup Monday, August 25, 2003 Long haul 10 G Ethernet 5
Equipment l BATM T 6 switch – l Optillion TOP 5010 -SC Xenpak transceiver – – l Including 10 G Uplink module developed at CERN as part of ESTA 1550 nm optics with maximum reach of 40 km Includes IEEE 802. 3 -2000 PMD BIST capability for BER measurements Optical amp’s and filters Monday, August 25, 2003 Long haul 10 G Ethernet 6
COM lab setup Monday, August 25, 2003 Long haul 10 G Ethernet 7
Field tests - 1 l Setup using pre-amp at receiver – – – 4 amp’s in total per link 3 x 80 km DCF (Dispersion Compensating Fiber) Achieved BER <1 E-15 ! • Limited by time shortage Monday, August 25, 2003 Long haul 10 G Ethernet 8
BER curves Monday, August 25, 2003 Long haul 10 G Ethernet 9
Field tests - 2 l Setup without using pre-amp at receiver – – – 3 amp’s in total per link 3 x 80 km DCF Achieved BER <1 E-12 • Shortage of time limited the experiments on this setup, BER could likely be improved Monday, August 25, 2003 Long haul 10 G Ethernet 10

Conclusion l Successfully used standard 10 G Ethernet LAN equipment to transmit over 250 km of SMF dark fiber (including optical amplification and DCF) – – – Setup meets 802. 3 ae objective with a BER of 1 E-12, best result is below 1 E-15 Transmitted full-duplex 8 Gb/s real Ethernet traffic using 16 x 1 Gb/s NIC’s and aggregating switch's Measured setup power penalty at 1 E-12 to be 2. 5 d. B Monday, August 25, 2003 Long haul 10 G Ethernet 13
Conclusion – cond. l The successful results prove the possibility to use low-priced Ethernet LAN equipment for long-haul connections Monday, August 25, 2003 Long haul 10 G Ethernet 14
Future work and use l Initial tests show the possibility to extend the reach even further – l Experiments could for example make use of the dark fibers continuing to Århus and Aalborg A 10 Gb/s link between SDU in Odense and DTU in Lyngby could for example be valuable as a GRID-to-GRID connection Monday, August 25, 2003 Long haul 10 G Ethernet 15
