What is extreme poverty? Watch the video and write down the definition. Video Extreme poverty = living on £ 1 a day or less
£ 1 a day You have a budget of £ 1 a day. That’s just £ 7 for the week. You will not be able to afford everything you need. In pairs you must decide what you are spending your weekly budget on and why. You can buy more than one of the same item.
The problems caused by only £ 1 a day Join up with another pair. Come up with a list of difficulties people would be likely to face if they had to make these choices about what to spend their money on. To get you started, think about what might happen if • You were often hungry. . . • You suddenly became very sick. . . • You could not afford fuel one week. . . • You could not pay the bus fare into town. . .

What can living in poverty look like? What signs of prosperity are there? What do you think daily life is like living here? What are the positives? And the problems? Would you like to live here? Why?

Are there any solutions? Look at the ideas for overcoming some of these problems. Write down how these ideas could help people deal with the extreme poverty they face. However, there is never a perfect solution. Can you think of some reasons why these ideas might not work?
What can you do? Live Below the Line is a campaign to raise awareness about extreme poverty. By getting people to experience the hardships of living off only £ 1 a day they raise money to try and improve the lives of the 1. 4 billion people around the world making these impossible choices every day. Homework Find out what your family spend on the weekly food shop and work out the cost person. Then write a paragraph answering this question: How does your diet compare to the diets of those living on £ 1 a day?
