Libraries and librarianship as a whole is an integral part of humanity and his intellectual life. Today, in the era of technology and the constant intrusion into their daily lives, libraries still retain its position as an institution, store and disseminate knowledge. During the transition to a global information society and the institution of the library is integrated in the social sector, and this is a change in the structure, function, mission and technology. Libraries and exhibit their needs highly skilled and well educated experts that will significantly participate in the reconciliation of book storage technologies and modernization of knowledge. In Bulgaria there are three universities that prepare welleducated specialists with professional qualifications of library and information professionals: ● State University of Library Studies and Information Technologi ● Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” ● St. Cyril and St. Methodious University of Veliko Turnovo
STATE UNIVERSITY OF LIBRARY STUDIES AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES The State University of Library Studies and Information Technologies is one of the most prestigious higher education institutes in Bulgaria. Building for more than half a century, SULSIT satisfies very well the needs of its students. It offers a wide variety of degree programs: ● Librarianship and Bibliography ● Library Management ● Typographical. Communications ● Information Funds of Cultural and Historical Heritage ● Information Technology ● Information Brokering ● Information Security ● Computer Science
The quality of training is provided by highly qualified teachers and specialists from practice. There is a specialized training and practice, held at prestigious institutions, organizations and companies. SULSIT graduates can work in libraries, publishers, public administration, in the information business, archives, museums, galleries and other cultural institutions and in the field of tourism. At present the SULSIT offers Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctor’s degree in both full-time and part-time format.
Librarianship and Bibliography The purpose of training in the specialty is to prepare graduates for fully realization in the library institution. Students studying courses that acquaint them with the nature, structure and functions of the library and bibliography, information technology, library management, marketing and PR technologies. Along with professional knowledge and general education students receive knowledge primarily in the field of social sciences and humanities: language, literature, history, politics and more. They may continue their studies in masters programs of the University in particular in the "Library Management", which will prepare them for managerial positions and in the "Library and Information Communications" as well as other universities at home and abroad.
Library management The course aims to prepare graduates in the field of library and information management. The educational program provides receipt of: expertise in library management, marketing and public communications, in-depth knowledge of specific functions of the library and institution for the organization, management and use of information resources in information systems, systems analysis, standardization and management quality, intellectual property, project management and more. There is an opportunity for students to choose subjects according to their interests. Graduates can continue their education to degree "Master" in SULSIT and other universities at home and abroad.
Typographical communications The course aims to prepare graduates in the field of print and new media, contemporary publishing, marketing and management of traditional and new types of publications. Training is tailored to the need for educational mobility and international comparability of knowledge and skills. Graduates can develop their skills at the same professional field or continue their education in the next degree in Master's programs in universities at home and abroad.
Information Funds of Cultural and Historical Heritage BA graduates in Information Funds of Cultural and Historical Heritage have a lot of opportunities to find professional realization in all spheres of culture. BA graduates are qualified experts prepared to work in national institutions forming and implementing the country’s cultural policy; they can also be employed as experts in regional institutions of culture, they can find jobs as animators and managers in the market of culture goods as well as in other cultural institutions such as the media, theaters, art galleries, book trade, culture tourism, NGOs, etc.
Other universities which study subjects centered on preparation of experts in the field of librarianship: librarianship SOFIA UNIVERSITY “St. Kliment Ohridski” Library studies or science has been taught at Sofia University since 1924 and he is the oldest university in Bulgaria. It is a four-year course for full time students and a three-year course for part time students. The program is in accordance with the State requirements and with the latest trends in international higher education. Since 1999 there has been a Master’s program in Library and Information Studies in both a full time and part time format. At present the Department of Library and Information Studies offers Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctor’s degree in both full-time and part-time format.
ST. CYRIL AND ST. METHODIUS UNIVERSITY OF VELIKO TURNOVO Department of Library and Mass Communications has fifteen years history in the structure of the University "St. Cyril and Methodius ". In the beginning the department is in the composition of the Faculty of Philology, and after that has been an integral part of the Faculty of the University of Veliko Turnovo, which is consistent with the classification of fields of higher education and professional fields. Department of Library and Mass Communications prepares highly qualified graduates in three main areas: Library and information activities; Public relations; Publishing. However the department prepares graduates for the following Master’s programs: Library and information activities. Library management; Cultural policy; Mass communications; PR.
For a sustainable transition from literature to the world of technology and adequate storage and dissemination of knowledge and other necessary skills and specialized training for the construction of electronic and digital libraries. Consistent with the needs of modern life SULSIT offers technical education to interact with others and be able to offer the market a well qualified team of experts and specialists. These specialties are: * * Information Technology. Information brokerage. Information security. Computer Science.
Information Technology Specialty is oriented towards training and preparation of graduates in information technology, to have theoretical and practical training. Students have subjects as information systems, system analysis, databases and automated services, organization, management and others. Students can choose courses according to their interest in the object-oriented programming, content management systems, ergonomics and other software. Successfully completed undergraduate programs in information technology can work as analytical and applied specialists in the development, maintenance and management of information systems in science, administration and business. After completing bachelors in IT training can continue their education in graduate programs in SULSIT and other universities in the country and abroad.
Information Brokering The course aims to prepare graduates with theoretical and applied interests in the field of information brokerage. The subjects, which are included in this course are: broking, information markets for traditional and electronic products and services, advertising, financial and accounting operations, exchanges and trading, consulting, corporate management, business forecasting, risk management, information management, business psychology. After completing bachelors in information brokerage, the graduates can work as information brokers, information specialists, to provide information in various governmental, non-governmental, industrial, scientific and cultural organizations. After completion of training bachelors in IB can continue their education in graduate programs in SULSIT and other universities in the country and abroad.
Information Security Specialty "Information Security" is the purpose of training to prepare graduates with theoretical and applied focus in the field of modern technologies for information security. Students learn basic and specialized courses such as linear algebra and analytic geometry, analysis, fundamentals of computer systems, theoretical foundations of computer programming, information systems, computer networks and communications, methodological foundations of information security, cryptography and cryptology, business psychology and others. Successfully completed undergraduate programs in information security can work as administrators in information security in government and business organizations. After completion of training bachelors in ICs can continue their education in graduate programs in SULSIT and other universities in the country and abroad.
Computer Science The purpose of education in Computer Science is to prepare graduates who will be resolved by means of modern technology and informatics practice tasks of systems and / or applied nature. The curriculum was developed in accordance with Computing Curriculum 2008 (CC 2008), a global professional organizations ACM and IEEE. The graduates can work as analysts and experts in application software of computer systems - in government organizations in the telecommunications companies and transport companies, in banks, financial institutions in the chemical, biomedical and pharmaceutical industry, in engineering firms, industrial companies and others. After completion of training bachelors CC can continue their education in graduate programs in SULSIT and other universities in the country and abroad.
