As a foreign student, IELP was a very attractive program for Siwon Park, a As a foreign student, IELP was a very attractive program for Siwon Park, a Korean student: “I was interested in cross-border environmental issues such as climate change and trade-related environmental issues, so I was excited to get into the program during my second year of law school. During the IELP clerkship, I helped prepare a practitioner’s handbook for local governments to develop eco-labels without violating international trade law. I also prepared a briefing for lawmakers relating to the WTO Appellate Body’s Report in the Sardines Case, a dispute between the European Union and Peru concerning the EU’s protectionist labeling practice disguised as a consumer safety measure. ”

Public Interest Externships and Internships An Externship is an opportunity for students who demonstrate Public Interest Externships and Internships An Externship is an opportunity for students who demonstrate strong academic ability to earn a semester’s or summer’s worth of academic credit for carefully supervised, full-time experience in a setting pertinent to their educational and career goals.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES: Environmental and Natural Resources: students choose from an array of placements in INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES: Environmental and Natural Resources: students choose from an array of placements in the environmental or natural resources law fields, including placements with government, private, and non-profit entities. Students are paired with a practicing environmental or natural resources lawyer in the Portland area. Environmental Justice and Civil Rights: provides students with practical experience working with community groups and community-based organizations on environmental justice issues in the Portland area. The work includes using legal and non-legal strategies to achieve greater equity in environmental decision-making. Environmental Prosecution: allows students to work with Assistant U. S. Attorneys in Portland to investigate and prosecute criminal matters under federal environmental laws such as the Endangered Species Act and Marine Mammal Protection Act. Western Resources Legal Center: students work for the Western Resources Legal Center, a Portland based non-profit organization that represents private individuals and businesses, in a variety of environmental and natural resources matters.

Pro Bono and Community Service Pro Bono volunteering is encouraged at the law school Pro Bono and Community Service Pro Bono volunteering is encouraged at the law school through pro bono honors awards noted on law school transcripts.
