Lessons learned and going to scale in the furlough years Loosely Structured Focus Groups
What’s involved in implementing PACT? (generated by the group) • • • • Training scorers, training trainers, calibration Reducing affective filter Preparing candidates (inc technology logistics), scaffolding the process Courses/curriculum alignment, embed, translating across disciplines—speaking a common language, CAT task work Communicating with CTs, faculty, stakeholders, districts, btsa Video tape release Collecting and distributing TE Collecting and reporting data Scoring Scorer enticement Problem solving (e. g. , student data) Faculty buy-in, seeing the benefits of PACT, developing the culture/community Using this as a process for improving programs Remediation Time, energy, money
Proposals for trimming down PACT (from recent CTC and TPA advisory group mtgs) • “slimmed down” version of the CATS • faculty and supervisors be allowed to score their own students’ tasks • random double scoring of a 15% sample of candidate responses be suspended. Double scoring for non-passers, however, would be retained. • recalibration of assessors once every two years (now 1/yr) for assessors who are continuously scoring • With respect to data reporting requirements for all three TPA models, that CTC would modify the data elements to be reported to include only what is mandated by law and essential for records
What are our strategies for implementing in the furlough years with regards to: • Preparing candidates • Scoring • Supporting faculty to learn from the data
Strategies generated by the group: (most involve scoring--other areas to be continued…) • • • • Finding NBCT teachers for scorers Asking alumni to contribute time scoring if they’ve been out 3 years (offer sub, or do Fri/Sat), consider it prof dev. , offer letter of recommendation Offer extension credit to scorers (more cost effective than cash), or strike a deal with districts to offer units that will count toward salary scale Pay retired teachers %50, BTSA scorers are fantastic Use online data collection/scoring platforms--eases calibration & data reporting (candidates buy subscription) No finals during finals week, score TE instead Hire student assistant (recent grad, workstudy), rates affordable, help candidates compress video, scan Invite doctoral students to score, & leadership M. A. candidates Invite Cooperating Teachers to score, require scoring as part of CT stipend or reduce stipend Student fee, lab fee Workload for scoring Should there be a universal cap on score price per TE? Find other funds, federal stimulus $ as some kind of consortium to put some backbone in this. Put a group together to write a proposal Use this data for research
