The Raw Biblical Data of Matthew 5: 9 • a son – rarely used for the young of animals – generally used of the offspring of men – in a restricted sense, the male offspring (one born by a father and of a mother) – in a wider sense, a descendant, one of the posterity of any one, • the children of Israel • sons of Abraham – used to describe one who depends on another or is his follower • a pupil • son of man – term describing man, carrying the connotation of weakness and mortality – son of man, symbolically denotes the fifth kingdom in Daniel 7: 13 and by this term its humanity is indicated in contrast with the barbarity and ferocity of the four preceding kingdoms (the Babylonian, the Median and the Persian, the Macedonian, and the Roman) typified by the four beasts. And His name will be called wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end, upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, to order it and establish it with judgment and justice from that time forward, even forever. Understanding Matthew 5: 9 • THE PEACEMAKERS. - “The peace intended is not merely that of political and economic stability, as in the Greco. Roman world, but peace in the Old Testament inclusive sense of wholeness, all that constitutes well-being. … The "peacemakers, " therefore, are not simply those who bring peace between two conflicting parties, but those actively at work making peace, bringing about wholeness and well-being among the alienated. ” - Robert A. Understanding Matthew 5: 9 • Jesus Made Peace. – The peace brought by Jesus is a peace between God and man and between Jew and Gentile (Eph. 2: 1317). • That peace was bought with the price of his own blood (Col. 1: 12). • Col 1: 20 -and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross. (NKJ) • He reconciled two opponents (God and man) by providing a suitable payment: – Suiting the offended (God) with adequate justice and payment. – Suiting with offender (man) with relief and motivation. • He also made peace between two peoples (Jew and Gentile). Eph. 2: 13 -16 – Jews who formerly boasted of their covenants with God, are deflated and given something they can commonly claim with the faithful gentiles. – The Gentiles are given a common Savior with the Jews. – Thus, peace is created through the common ground of the cross.
Understanding Matthew 5: 9 • The Peace-makers Are Those Who Extend Jesus’ Will. – “Who are the peacemakers? - Peace is generally the opposite of war. Peace can be a state of harmony or the absence of hostility. "Peace" is used to describe the cessation of violent conflict. Peace can mean a state of quiet or tranquility — an absence of disturbance or agitation. Peace can also describe a relationship between any people characterized by respect, justice, and goodwill. Peace can describe calm, serenity, and silence. This latter understanding of peace can also pertain to an individual's sense of himself or herself, as to be "at peace" with one's own mind. ”’ Wikipedia
Understanding Matthew 5: 9 • Those who are peaceable towards others. – Those who speak peaceably (Prov. 15: 1). – Christians need to "follow after the things which make for peace, and the things whereby we may edify one another" (Rom. 14: 19). • Paul made peace by trying to "please all men in all things" (1 Cor. 10: 32 -11: 1). • Peace is made by avoiding foolish questions that gender strife (1 Tim. 6: 3 -5); Tit. 2: 1; 3: 8). (Psa. 34: 14). • Peacemakers are in short supply and desperately needed. – Peace is needed in our homes, in our communities, in our nation, in our world and even in the church.
Understanding Matthew 5: 9 • Peace is lost in strife and war. – These come due to human greed and ambition (Lk. 22: 24; Jas. 4: 1 -3). • Those who are contentious are condemned (Tit. 3: 9 -11; 1 Tim. 6: 4; 2 Tim. 2: 24). – Abraham was a peacemaker. • His speech for peace to Lot pleaded "we be brethren" (Gen. 13: 7 -9). – Isaac manifested the spirit of a peacemaker when he gave way twice before some Philistines who took over wells that Isaac had dug (Gen. 26: 17 -22). – Moses found two of his brethren fighting and intervened to try to make peace (Acts 7: 26). – Abigail was a peacemaker when she sought to prevent David from destroying Nabal (1 Sam. 25). • As the psalmist observes, "Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!" (Psa. 133: 1)
Understanding Matthew 5: 9 • Those Who Preach The Gospel are peacemakers. Rom 10: 15 - And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: "How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, who bring glad tidings of good things!“ (NKJ) – Eph 6: 15 - and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; (NKJ) • Those who try to make peaceful conditions exist for the growth among members. – Rom 14: 19 - Therefore let us pursue things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify another. (NKJ) – Eph 4: 3 - endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. (NKJ) – 1 Thes 5: 13 - and to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. Be at peace among yourselves. Understanding Matthew 5: 9 • Those who strive for peace with all people. – Heb 12: 14 - Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: (NKJ) – James 3: 18 - Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace. (NKJ) – 1 Pet 3: 11 -12 - Let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their prayers; but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil. " (NKJ)
The Reward Of Matthew 5: 9 • CALLED SONS OF GOD. – A High Honor Recognizing a Kinship To God Displayed In Your Life. • Called “sons of God” because it is seen that you act in the interest of extending the peace He wants us to have. • God is known as a God of Peace. – Rom 15: 33 Now the God of peace be with you all. Amen. (KJV) – Phil 4: 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (NKJ) • The recognition of kinship to God is your highest compliment. – James 2: 23 And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. " And he was called the friend of God. (NKJ) – Think what an honor that description was for Abraham. – I Jn 3: 1 Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. (NKJ)
The Reward Of Matthew 5: 9 • Since God is the God of peace, then Christians who actively promote his peace are identified as his children (Jas. 3: 13 -18). – "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name" (Jn. 1: 12). – Christians are to be at peace with one another. • Jesus commanded, "Have peace one with another" (Mk. 9: 50). • We are to "live in peace" (2 Cor. 13: 11) and "be at peace among yourselves" (1 Thess. 5: 13). • "God hath called us to peace (1 Cor. 7: 15). (Eph. 4: 3) (1 Pet. 3: 10 -11).
The Reward Of Matthew 5: 9 • Christians seek to reconcile men to God (2 Cor. 5: 20) – Seeking peace seeks to be reconciled to his brother (Mt. 5: 23 ff), goes quickly to a brother who trespasses against him (Mt. 18: 15 -17), would rather "take wrong" than strive with brethren (1 Cor. 5: 7), will be ready to forgive those who ask forgiveness (Mt. 18: 21 -22). – God hates the sowers of strife (Prov. 6: 16 -19). • Things that destroy peace are contention (Prov. 26: 21; 29: 22; Eph. 4: 25, 31 -32), – vengence (Rom. 12: 19), – an uncontrolled tongue (Jas. 1: 19; Prov. 15: 1), – gossip (Prov. 16: 28; 26: 20), – foolish and unlearned questions (2 Tim. 2: 23). • Things that make for peace (Eph. 4: 1 -6), – pursuit (1 Pet. 3: 11), – zeal (2 Pet. 3: 14), – humility (Prov. 13: 10), – doing good (Rom. 12: 20 -21), – seeking reconciliation with brethren (Mt. 5: 22 -25; 17: 1 -2).
The Reward Of Matthew 5: 9 • Men can always find peace and reconciliation with God. – But peace is not always possible with all men. "If it be possible, as much as in you lieth, be at peace with all men" (Rom. 12: 18). – There "a time of war, and a time of peace" (Eccl. 3: 8). • Jesus understood and taught this when he said that he "came not to send peace but a sword" (Mt. 10: 34).
The Reward Of Matthew 5: 9 • "Peace at any price" is never the slogan of the child of God. – Peace at the price of sacrificing or compromising the truth is foolish and deadly. • "The wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable. . . " (Jas. 3: 17). • There is no peace in compromising the truth or the faith of Jesus Christ. The child of God must always keep the sword of the Spirit ready (Eph. 6: 17) and • "earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints" (Jude 1: 3). – When Ahab saw Elijah after three years of drought, he blamed the prophet for troubling Israel. Elijah countered that it was truly Ahab that was the "troubler in Israel" (I Ki. 18: 17). • Ahab caused war and strife in Israel by bringing in false gods and false worship. • Elijah was a peacemaker who warred against the false religion and sought to bring the people back to Jehovah. • Once again the prophets promised that God would bring peace to men of all nations that came to his holy mountain and became part of his house "and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more" (Isa. 2: 1 -5; Mic. 4: 1 -5). • This house or kingdom would be ruled by the "Prince of peace" (Isa. 9: 6), who would "speak peace" (Zech. 9: 10).
The Reward Of Matthew 5: 9 • Jesus came not to fight, he came to establish a kingdom of peace by preaching "good tidings of peace (Acts 10: 36). – Men are at war with each other in this world because they are at odds and alienated from God. – When men are reconciled to God, then they will be at peace with each other. • "Christ is our peace, " his death upon the cross became the means by which men could be reconciled back to God and receive peace (Col. 1: 19 -23; 2: 13 -15; Eph. 2: 11 -18). • The message of salvation is "the gospel of peace" (Eph. 6: 15), "the word of reconciliation" (2 Cor. 5: 18 -20). • The peacemakers are the sons of God now (1 Jn. 3: 1). – In eternity the full glory of God's children will be revealed (Rom. 8: 23; 1 Jn. 3: 2)
In Conclusion • The kingdom of heaven is about “peace” (Rom. 14: 17). – Jesus’ ministry was about bringing that kingdom into the hearts and lives of men. – When we extend the gospel of the kingdom, we are giving people a chance at peace with God. • We are the peacemakers. –. . . that absence of spiritual unrest and that assurance of salvation and of God’s loving presence under all circumstances which results from exercising faith in God and in His Son and from the contemplation of His gracious promises. ” William Hendriksen (John 14: 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you)
In Conclusion • Our lives must be about our Father’s business, which is to extend His kingdom to others. • When He rules their hearts, His kingdom is established within them, and they can extend His peace to others. – The peacemakers are a blessed people. – They have a rewarding work and they are recognized for being related to God in their actions and attitudes. • Want to be a “peacemaker”?
