Construction • Monument to the icebreaker "Lenin" in the memorial, "Conquerors of the Arctic" in Murmansk The project was developed in the nuclear-powered CDB-15 (now the "Iceberg") in 1953 -1955 (project number 92) after the decision to build nuclear-powered icebreaker 20 November 1953 the Council of Ministers of the USSR. • The ship was laid in 1956 at a shipyard them. A. Marti in Leningrad. The main construction – V. I. Chervyakov. Launched on December 5, 1957. September 12, 1959 since the plant went to the Admiralty shipyard sea trials led by P. A. Ponomarev. •
Operation • Due to the large capacity power plant and high autonomy, an icebreaker in the first navigation showed an excellent performance. In 1966 the results of operation, it was decided to replace the old three-reactor nuclear steam-generating unit to a perfect two-reactor. Had a good ice-covered. Only during the first 6 years of operation, the icebreaker was over 82 thousand nautical miles and conducted yourself over 400 vessels. The icebreaker "Lenin" has worked for 30 years and in 1989 was decommissioned and placed in the eternal parking in Murmansk. Now a museum on the icebreaker, work is underway to expand the exposure.
The design of • The atomic icebreaker "Lenin" - vessel with an elongated middle superstructure and two masts, the aft placed landing platform for helicopters, ice reconnaissance. The nuclear steam plant water-water type, which is located in the central part of the vessel, produces steam for 4 main turbine generators that feed the three DC propulsion motors, drive the last three propellers (2 onboard and 1 medium) particularly robust construction. There are two standalone auxiliary power. Office machinery, devices and systems - remote. The crew made a good living conditions for long-term Arctic voyage.
Accidents • • At the atomic icebreaker "Lenin" there were two accidents. The first occurred in February 1965. Was partially damaged the reactor core. The second accident occurred on an icebreaker in 1967. It was detected leaking pipelines III loop reactor. During the elimination of leaks were caused serious damage to mechanical equipment of the reactor.
