The notion of Lexicology. LEXICOLOGY ‘lexis’ 2 Greek words ‘logos’ Lexicology is the part of linguistics dealing with the vocabulary of the language and the properties of words as the main units of language.
The main lexicological terms: vocabulary, word and word-group. VOCABULARY the system formed by all the words and word equivalents that the language possesses.
WORD the basic unit of a given language resulting from the association of a particular meaning with a particular group of sounds capable of a particular grammatical employment.
‘toy’ 1. an object for children to play with; 2. 2 sounds; 3. a noun.
WORD-GROUP group of words which exists in the language as a ready-made unit, has the unity of meaning, the unity of syntactical function. e. g. as loose as a goose (clumsy)

BRANCHES OF LEXICOLOGY 1. Descriptive Lexicology studies the vocabulary at a definite stage of its development. 2. Contrastive Lexicology investigates a theoretical basis on which the vocabularies of different languages can be compared and described. 3. Etymology (Historical Lexicology) studies the origin of words, their change and development.
TYPES OF LEXICAL UNITS A lexical unit is a two-facet element possessing form and meaning. ü words; ü morphemes; ü set expressions.
